Arduin

Post by serleran »

So, I have been on sort of a kick with converting a lot of the Arduin main rules to C&C, but I was wondering what the general consensus on the boards was for the original game / material. Have any of you ran through the Arduin Dungeons (any of them?)

I ran one about two years ago. The setting stuff is awesome, but the rules are a bit wonky and powers were definitely not always "equal".
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

It's been over 30 years since I ran through a couple of them as a player. I think it is a better GM tool box than a game...

It is definitely an awesome tool box, as Serl's conversions are reminding me.

There are some rather interesting concepts in the books, primarily where it concerns a different way to view the classes. One example -- I actually like the Arduin paladin, but not the traditional one.

I don't have the books but have heard mixed things about them. Serl's conversions are interesting and have made me want to see more.

I used to have the original three books, but the font size was so small so as to be basically worthless to me. I sold 'em and picked up the hardback "Arduin Trilogy" book and the font size is large and easy to read. It also went through an extensive reorganization so that it's put together with like topics in one place. Very spiffy.

I don't actually play Arduin but love to read through the old stuff to get ideas and inspiration.

When the first volume came out, I lifted frrom it for 1edition Basic D&D. Later used it with DragonQuest, very successfully. If you tried to use the original Arduin as a ruleset on its own, you would go mad. We lost more gamesmasters that way.

Thanks.

Wow! Expensive. I think I'll have to try used.

Yeah, even just the core 3 set sells for $50. For all 9 books the price isn't bad, but definitely look for "used" first.

EmpCho is not original... sorry. Well, maybe the later Dungeons.

I personally don't use any of their material, which is not to say it's horrible... it's just not my idea of the "voice" that is Arduin.
