Purchasing the Codex of Erde

Post by Troll Lord »

Erde made its debut in 2000 with the After Winter's Dark Campaign Setting book. This little blue book was 24 pages and came with a ton of info. It sold well enough that it inspired us to create the Codex of Erde.

The Codex of Erde (not the name change to Aihrde) is a 256 page hardback with maps, descriptions, histories, gods etc etc etc. It originally retailed for 34.95, with the full color map being sold separate for 5. It is written for 3.0. Of course, being a Troll product, the rules are very light and don't detract from the setting material, most of them being lumped in the back of the book.

Check it out: http://www.trolllord.com/codex.htm

That was then, this is now.

A few hundred copies of the Codex remain and we are presently moving them out of stock. We have it on sale for 10.00, this includes the map. So if you are interested pick it up. Its definately worth the money you will spend, and you may find, like so many others, that it is a setting that fits your bill perfectly.

You can purchase it by calling us at 501-680-6597 or going directly to the link above.

Thanks,

Steve

I have a copy I won at ECon last year as the best player in my session. Ijust bought the map at the Con this year and both are awesome. The Codex is worth the history alone.

Erde is awesome. I was a fanatic for the early Forgotten Realms (greybox and the 1e supplements only) and I switched my world to Erde as soon as I read half the history.

IMNSHO, TLG made a world that could very well be as loved as the early Greyhawk has been. The best part of the setting is that the monsters make sense. There is a history for the Orcs, Trolls and other humanoids that has been lacking in all other worlds.

The best description I have given of Erde is think Middle-Earth that has been under Saurons rule but is now suddenly free. It's worth teh $10 alone for that type of setting.

That is exactly how I have described Erde! I don't think I'll ever need another setting, because there are so many elements of Erde that I enjoy. $10 is a steal.

Great world setting.

Great price for the book.

Must have for those running C&C modules.

Highly recommended!

I remember buying this bad boy, special order, through my then-FLGS, at full price, thinking "wow, this book kicks donkey," havign read it fully, in one day, and shocking the hell out the Trolls in the process. Getting it for $10... well, I'd do it. In fact, I think I will, so there's another copy to use.

What will be different with regards to this and the forthcoming Aihrde product(s)?

From what I understand, mostly just formatting and organization will be greatly improved, plus the changing of names. The history and such is staying the same as far as I have heard.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Nope. Just wait for and buy the "upgraded" version. One copy will serve you fine until the new goodies get printed. Mine has held up to over 3 years of weekly use.

I've had my Codex since about the time it was printed, and its in very good shape. The book holds up nicely. I hope the new folio is similar in quality.

I really wish we knew what the changes between the Codex and the new Aihrde stuff is going to be. Is the timeline going to be advanced? Is there going to be a significant, or any change for that matter, in the history of the setting? Changes in cosmology?

I think there is going to be some changes in geography between the Codex and the new After Winter's Dark folio, but is there any extrememe changes?

Inquiring minds need to know!

Damn you all! I just placed my phone order for the Codex (and of course ordered 3 other things at the same time). I might as well bend over and kiss my retirement fund goodbye. Y'all keep getting me to buy more TLG products. Would it kill them to take a month or two and release some crap for a change? I think I'm going to have to ban myself from the forum so that I don't find out about all of the goodies floating around out there just waiting for me to buy them.

The After Winter Dark Folio is the "replacement," as you put it. It is the C&C version of the d20 Codex.

I think TLG still has a number of the Codex's left - I got the new Aihrde folio first, but I think the Codex is wonderful material still as a resource book behind the folio.... just make sure and note the minor changes (names are a little different in some cases).

I started my campaign just using the folio, but as we got to major city I found the Codex section on Orders and Guilds very helpful!

While I think the new After Winter's Dark folio is a suitible replacement for the old Codex of Erde, there is still lots of material one could use from the old book. Frankly, the Codex of Erde is kind of special in it's look. I don't think I have ever seen an RPG book laid out in such a way, with that type of paper stock and overall feel (with things like neat font types and the like).

But, the Codex is kind of out of date now with the new folio.

Well I think the look/free/cover etc. may be out of date with the C&C/Aihrde product line (cover art), the material is perfectly usable and relevant.

There have been no changes in timeline or history/background/events.

Also, the material in the Folio is only a portion of what's contained in the Codex.

Let's not forget that Steve has mentioned a time or two that an Aihrde boxed set may be coming down the pipe at some future date.

PS: The Codex is still one of my favorite RPG books to pick up and just read.

I bought it a year ago about the time I bout C&C PH & Mn'T books.I'd to know how much is going to change in the convertion.I want more detailed info on the Gods n' their cults.Plus , a more detailed economic system.I don't like the one in the Codex. Each country should have a small bit saying what common imports n' exports are for the region, like in the FR campaign book.I like my campaign setting detailed,at least their religions/

Gods,Economy & major cities/towns/villages of import. If I have to flesh out everything,I might as work on my own campaign world.

That said I do like what I've read in the Codex.

Steve's recent article about the Codex got me very interested, so I ordered a copy here:
http://search.a1books.com/cgi-bin/mktSe ... 193127505X

It came to $6.24, and that included S&H. It supposedly shipped already. I wonder if if it will have the map.

Good price . . and good question. But if no map, no worries - the map is also in the Codex (black and white sections, but perfectly usable).

Also, the Trolls have a PDF of the map for download:

Do not judge by the writing and layout. Force yourself to read the content. That is what is exceptional.

Just received the copy in the mail. I'm eager to dig into it. It arrived in good shape (shrink-wrapped) and fairly quickly (it was sent media mail), so if someone is considering it, seems safe to buy from that place.

The Codex is certainly a treasure.

As much as I love the Airhde Folio is not really a 'replacement' but an excellent primer on the setting providing a needed foundation to a campaign run in this setting. It will certainly do the trick until a comprehensive box set (or book) comes into being for C&C.

Since we are not likely to see something like this in the near future, I'd still suggest to track down the Codex and in all areas of 'conflicting' information, allow the Folio to be your guide.
