Most liked Fantasy settings...

Post by Treebore »

Notice I did not say "Favorite". For me settings are like modules, I cannot name a "favorite". There are a lot that I do like, though.

So my "most liked" settings would be, in no particular order:

Forgotten Realms
Kalamar
Erde/Aihrde
Wilderlands
Greyhawk
Ravenloft
Scarred Lands
The world of Paladium Fantasy

There are others that like, such as Iron Kingdoms, Ilshara, Golarian, Aerth, and more, but the ones listed are the ones I like most. Probably helps that they are also worlds I have actually used for my campaigns.

So what are yours? If they are somewhat obscure, please provide links.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

On top of Greyhawk I always liked Howard's world for the Conan books. I used it for my earlier campaigns.

In no particular order:

Greyhawk (Post War)
Forgotten Realms (Greybox and first few supplements)
Olde World (Warhammer)
Aerth (Dangerous Journeys)
Planescape

I am also fond of Ivalice from the Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII and Vagrant Story video games. I always wanted to try to adapt the setting for table top but have yet to have the time to.

Well, they have all been covered before, but here you go on mine

Middle Earth (Tolkien was my introduction to fantasy so its setting is near and dear to my heart!)
Forgotten Realms (Greybox and some of the supplements, Its my most ran and played in setting)
World of Paladium (my second RPG, and again loved the setting)
Ravenloft (when ran and played correctly and in small doses)
AD&D’s historic settings (the green books)

Now for worlds I’ve seen and would like, but never had the chance play or run …
Erde/Aihrde (Love the Troll’s setting, but didn’t find it till I had no gaming group)
Midnight (Love the idea of a underground war against evil)

I’m sure I’ve missed some here or there …

Hmm. Of published fantasy settings I like these most, in order they are:

1. Cerilia, and the whole Birthright setting
2. The World of Greyhawk
3. Ansalon (DragonLance setting)
4. Eredane (Midnight setting)
5. Thunder Rift (Known World micro setting)
* The complete Known World setting

*Honorable Mention.

In some of these selections, I like parts of the whole setting. For instance, in the DragonLance setting there are the continents of Taladas and some other new continent. I'm not fond of the latter at all, but love Ansalon (where the DragonLance novels take place, mostly). The same can be said of the Known World. There are places in that setting I love (Karameikos, Glantri, Alphatia, and the Hollow World), but there are also places that irk me (Athraughin tribes, Ethengar, Savage Coast, etc.).

There are lots of them I like for a reason or other, several of which have been mentioned. However, I will add:

Atlantis (The Arcanum / Talislanta)

HarnWorld (HarnMaster)

Glorantha (RuneQuest)

Jakandor (AD&D2e Odyssey)

Arduin (Arduin)

The Possible Earth (TORG)

Earthdawn (Earthdawn)

Gamma World (Gamma World)

Windswept (my homebrew)

Athas (Dark Sun pre-Revised)

and many, many others as noted

Yeah, there are a lot I own and like, I just listed the ones I really like. Again, probably because I have actually used them as my campaign setting. I am sure more would be added to that list if I were to use the others for future campaigns.

I only included ones I have ran at least one game in (excluding those already listed by someone else.) If I included those which I have not, yet, it would be...

Synnibar (World of Synnibar)

Qin (Qin)

Steam Earth (Castle Falkenstein)

The Weird West (Deadlands)

Zombie Earth (All Flesh Must Be Eaten)

and a lot more if I thought of it longer.

If we're including Deadlands and Gamma World, add those to my list. Hell, even Rifts for that matter.

Hmmm. If I had to rank them, I don't know that I could. I honestly prefer playing in my own setting most of the time-- mostly because I know so much about it, but, in no particular order:

Ansalon (Dragonlance)
Eberron
Golarion (Pathfinder RPG)
Airdhe
Toril (Forgotten Realms, 1E/2E), including Al Qadim
Athas (Dark Sun)
Planescape

Ravenloft is my all-time favorite. After that (in no particular order):
Tainted Lands
Airdhe
Greyhawk
A zombified North America in the late 1990's
Innistrad (I know it's not an RPG setting, but I still think it's awesome)
Eberron

I'm also slowly working on a homebrew setting, Terra Penumbra, so that should get mention. :)
