Using C&C to run a middle earth setting, any thoughts?
I know there are several Middle earth settings (One ring, Etc.) but my players are comfortable with C&C. Does anyone have any tips for such a campaign? The first thing I thought of was Priest spells acting as Wizard spells. And having Monks come from Harad.
Thanks,
Jeff

Some one was doing a C&C conversion a while ago. Try doing a search of the forums.

I've been running a middle earth game using C&C for awhile now, with virtually no changes to the rules. It works great, and even our most hardcore Tolkien-Geek has no complaints. We are having great fun, couldn't recommend it more. We did up bow damage, and crits are a little more harsh, but no other real changes.
In case you care...
Setting - war of the ring, centering around Dale, the Withered Heath, and Mirkwood. The team are agents of King Brand.
Characters - Female Knight of Dol Amroth (knight/Dunedain), Gondorian Captain (captain home brew class/Dunedain), Dalesman Scout (Middleman/Ranger), Bodyguard to the Knight (Gondorian/Fighter), Bodyguard to Knight (Dwarf/Fighter), Wood Elf Hunter (Elf/Cleric).

Magic might need to be revisited as there is really not that much in Middle Earth. Also, there aren't that many creature types, which is good, but somewhat boring.

In fact, you might even limit PCs to non-spell users. C&C makes that easier than D&D did, in that it removes spellcasting from rangers, paladins, and bards.serleran wrote:Magic might need to be revisited as there is really not that much in Middle Earth.

Shadows of The Halfling Hall would fit great into a middle earth scenario.

big tolkein fan here! c&c is a great system. depending on how "true" you want to be to the middle earth universe, it is recomended to decrease the presence of pc controled magic. if your group is okay with it then play as is.
also, I reccomend setting the game in a portion of middle earth which was not seen during the war of the ring. one of my favorite campaigns is one which guides the pc's to harad where they need to prevent a junctioning of forces which would over whelm the forces of minas tirith at pellenor.
i use radagast as the wizard guide (who in the books was too busy to help gandalf. why? because of the massing haradrim threat in the south of course!) such a campaign would give the pc's a chance to help the fellowship without altering canon

I would check out Lord of the Rings Online. The game shows how other events were going on at the time and it has a really good list of monsters to draw from.

AD&D per se is as dead a system as Latin is a language, while the C&C game has much the same spirit and nearly the same mechanics. --Gary Gygax 8/16/06

This is one of the best aspects to C&C. It is also one of the reason I enjoy sticking to the core classes. It makes spellcasters that much more unique and mysterious !

You may want to check out the Tolkien and Middle Earth forumat OD&D Discussion. There we have discussed how to use the setting in a D&D type game while keeping the D&D aspects alive. There have been some good ideas come out of these discussions. Two particularly good threads are'My take on Middle Earth as a D&D Setting' and 'Middle Earth on Crack'.

Julian Grimm nice links thanks.
I would recommend that class and a half be required for all spell casters with the spell casting class being the mandatory half class. This would retrict the amount of spell power player characters have but give them more hitpoints and other abilities.

So, Gandalf really could have been a 5th level Magic-user! (Assuming he had 10 total levels, which isn't too much of a stretch if you assume that 4 levels = hero and 8 levels = super hero, so 10 levels would max out my campaign....)
:
Gandalf a 5th level mage ?
Am I the only one who sees this as an issue?
Gandalf was a mage who lived over 300 lives of men, men lived to be around 40ish in the timeline. that means Gandalf was a 12000 year old 5th level mage ?
In the books he is basically portrayed as a demi god...
5th level ?
To each his own I guess.

Re: Using C&C to run a middle earth setting, any thoughts?
Agreed, Gandalf is clearly very powerful, but limited in how much he can use his power without alerting the enemy. That's another reason why I'd leave spellcasters as NPCs and limit PCs to non-spellcasters.
