Hexblade Conversion?

Post by Brutorz Bill »

I love the Hexblade from 3.5, looking at converting it to C&C.

Doesn't look to hard. How would you guys handle spontaneous casting?

I've been thinking about this as well... I like the flavor of that class.

Since C&C is scaled down in terms of the numbers vs. 3.5 and spellcasting has been dropped from all but the pure spellcasting classes (wizard, illusionist, druid, cleric), I would drop spellcasting from the hexblade and concentrate on what they're made for... cursing.

Off the top of my head:

*Since bestow curse uses a Charisma save, I'd make them a Charisma prime class.

*I'd beef up their armor choice significantly since they won't be casting.

*I'd drop the mettle ability but leave the Cha mod saving throw bonus for saving throws.

*Drop the familiar.

*I'd give them a couple curse-like abilities to fill out the flavor... probably one at level four (I would give them a version of the AC reducing shadow found in the PHB II), one at level 8 (remove or bestow curse 1/week + 1 every 3 levels?), and one at level 12 (their aura of misfortune ability from 3.5 that gives them a miss chance versus attacks against them or maybe some kind of death ward).

*I assume I'd leave the hexblade curse and progression as is.

*I'd look at Serleran's class builder experience breakdown to get an idea of how much it would cost or I'd give them the ranger's exp progression chart to start and see how that goes.

Just some thoughts about it, I'd love to see what you or anyone else came up with...

Some really good ideas Moorcrys. However, I like the Hexblade having a familiar and some spell-casting ability. Guess I'm going to have to ponder this one some more.

Thats cool with me.
The familiars in C&C are old school, not 3.5, so you'll have to be a bit more careful with them.

As far as spontaneous casting goes, the hexblade's spells known and spells per day list is pretty small, and the progression is slow, so I wouldn't see any problem leaving it as is. Most of the spells on the hexblade list are in the C&C Player's Handbook if I recall, and it would just be a matter of converting the few spells that aren't. I would let their Charisma mod influence their spells per day as any Prime would a pure spellcaster. The saving throw challenges will be weaker when a hexblade is casting due to their half-caster level for everything rule and their are no feats to mitigate that weakness in C&C (like practiced spellcaster and spell focus)... I might change the hexblade's spellcasting penalty to hexblade level -3 for their saving throw challenges and spell durations/range/etc. to bring them more in line with a character who was multiclassing a warrior/spellcaster class, but that's just me.

My humble opinion is that with spellcasting and their abilities they'll be much more powerful in a C&C game than in a 3.5 game, where they were great for flavor but weak for punch... compare the hexblade with spellcasting to the C&C paladin . I would probably have them use the paladin's exp chart for advancement for a start and see how that went.
