Doom Pulp

Post by gwb83 »

This is a genre mash-up of Amazing Adventures with Doom the board game. How would pulp heroes deal with demonic inter-dimensional invaders? What kind of stories could emerge from such a scenario. I hope to find out.

The first step is to convert Doom invaders to AA terms. The zombies as presented in AA seem to work just fine, so on to the specific beasties of Doom:

IMP

No. Enc: 1-8
Size: M
HD: 2d8
Move: 30
AC: 12
Attacks: Fireball 1d6, 2 claws (1d4)
Special: Darkvision
Sanity: 1/1d8
Saves: P
Int: Low
Align: CE
Type: Extraplanar
XP: 15+2

Imp is a poor term for these rank-and-file demons. These hellish humanoids are capable of hurling small pyrokinetic fireballs from a distance. Imps attack with complete disregard for self-preservation. They are as fast as humans and will attack with rending claws at close quarters.

TRITE

No. Enc: 2-12
Size: S
HD: 1d6
Move: 50, 20 climb
AC: 14
Attacks: Bite 1d4
Special: Ambush (+2 initiative), Darkvision
Sanity:0/1d4
Saves: P
Int: Inferior
Align: NE
Type:Extraplanar
XP: 9+1

These six-legged arachnid-like critters are very quick. They instinctively attack in numbers by ambushing targets from tight hiding places or tunnels. This ambush tactic grants +2 on initiative.

DEMON (Demon Dog)

No. Enc: 1-2
Size: L
HD: 7d8
Move: 40
AC: 20
Attacks: Bite 2d6
Special: Watchful (free attack), Darkvision
Sanity: 1/1d6
Saves: P
Int: Animal
Align: CE
Type: Extraplanar
XP: 270+7

These powerful dog-like beasts are simply ferocious. Their tough hide provides ample protection as they charge into their prey with a wicked maw. They also possess sharp reflexes granting them a free attack on any foe moving into striking distance (adjacent).

MANCUBUS

No. Enc: 1-2
Size: L (9')
HD: 9d8
Move: 20
AC: 16
Attacks: Energy Blaster 3d6, Slam 2d6
Special: Auto-fire, Darkvision
Sanity: 1/1d10
Saves: P
Int: Low
Align: CE
Type: Extraplanar
XP: 600+9

Slow and lumbering abominations with powerful guns fused to their arms, the Mancubus is a walking tank. The guns are capable of full-automatic fire per AA pg 151. At close range, the Mancubus will club foes with it's metal-laden forearms.

HELL KNIGHT

No. Enc: 1
Size: L (12')
HD: 12d8
Move: 40
AC: 22
Attacks: 2 Claws 2d10 or Sweep
Special: Sweep (area attack), Knockback, Darkvision
Sanity: 2/2d10
Saves: P
Int: Low
Align: CE
Type: Extraplanar
XP: 1600+12

These powerful hulks are deadly foes in close combat, capable of taking out several men with a single attack! To make matters worse, they are covered with a thick exoskeleton.

Knockback: Their great strength causes them to knock a man-sized foe 5 feet away for every 5 hp of damage dealt.

Sweep: An area attack that forces all enemies adjacent to the Hell Knight to make a DEX check vs CL 12. This attack deals 2d8 to all targets simultaneously. A successful save halves the damage. Knockback also applies.

A character idea... This is actually a bit more detail than I needed, considering these characters could be short-lived.

Janet Reeves-Dawson, 1st Level Mentalist
The young widow of a wealthy heir to the Blue Horizon Shipping empire, based in Long Beach, CA. Young Janet always had a knack for empathy and her "sixth-sense" was usually a light-hearted thing among her family. While attending USC, she met and soon married, Harold Dawson, the dashing son of a shipping magnate.

However, young Mr. Dawson went was sent to Europe to fight in The Great War and he was killed in the line of duty in France in 1919. Thousands of miles away, Janet knew the exact moment. She awoke with a start and bolted out of bed just after 2:00 a.m with a sickening feeling of grief. She knew what had happened. It was confirmed a few days later when an Army Colonel arrived with official notification.

Finishing her Masters in English at USC in 1920, Janet became a freelance writer/editor. One of her first contracts was a paranormal psychology piece, which she accepted, not because it paid well, but rather she was compelled by the subject matter. In the course of the project, she discussed her nascent ablity with Dr. Roman DeLantz, who introduced her to meditation. Through his techniques, she began to tap her psychic powers.

With her freedom and considerable wealth, Janet embarked on a life adventure. She founded the Occidental Explorers Society in 1922 to attract other intrepid souls. The purpose of the OES was to explore and preserve the mysteries of the world.

Another character:

Louis Conrad, 1st level Gumshoe
Born in San Francisco, Lou's father was a police detective. As a kid, Lou was fascinated with his father's work. The boy would often pick his dad's brain about his current case or tricks of the trade. In his teens, Lou found another passion in the emerging field of anthropology, which he studied voraciously as hobby. He considered going to the east coast to pursue formal studies, but his father asked him to stay and help with the new family business, Conrad Detective Agency.

By the age of 20, Lou was already a savvy investigator and began to handle his own cases. However, he longed to travel and hoped to apply his sleuth skills to something more than the quibbles of city aristocrats. A few months later, he attended a lecture given by author Janet Reeves-Dawson which led to his joining the Occidental Explorer's Society.

Let's start with Mr. Conrad's story.

November 1922
A telegraph delivered to Conrad Detective Agency hired Lou to follow French philosopher Antoine Apollonaire in San Fran. He tracked Apollonaire for a day. Late that evening, Apollonaire met a ship returning from the Pacific.

Can Mr. Conrad get close enough to eavesdrop?
[Hide 16 vs CC 17] Oh great. The man greeting Apollonaire saw Conrad's shadow. He sends a couple crewmen to check it out, while he brings Apollonaire on board the ship.

Conrad sheds his trenchcoat and fedora and begins searching through crates like he's looking for something particular. He poses as a shipping manager.

[CHA 11 vs CC 15] They don't buy it. The thugs try to capture him.

[Initiative: Conrad 6, Crewmen 3 (knife), 2 (club)] Everyone draws weapons, but Conrad is first with his 45 ACP. Since the gun was first, they freeze. "Get back on your boat and I'll forget about this whole thing."

[CHA 10 vs CC 16] Again, they don't back down. "You can't get both of us." one mudders.

[Initiative: the Reach rule applies here] Conrad fires twice!
[Pistol 14 vs AC 13] The shot drives the knife-man backwards and he collapses!
[Pistol 8 vs AC 13] Second shot missed cleanly! Oh crap!
[Club 11 vs AC 12] Conrad ducks and the club smacks a 6x6 brace.

[Initiative: Conrad 2, Club 6]
[Club 9 vs AC 12] Another swing and a miss! Phew!
[Pistol 15 vs AC 13] Conrad sticks the pistol in his ribs and fires a single debilitating shot!

With both crewman bleeding-out on the concrete, Conrad grabbed his hat and coat and took off! He could hear more crew scrambling for the gangway.

[Hide -2 (natural 1, -3 imploding) vs CC 16] While meandering through stacks of pallets, he rounds the corner and was surprised by three more crewmen waiting with guns at the ready!

Do they capture him and kill him?
[CHA 12 vs CC 16] Uh-oh!
[2 Fate Points spent to increase CHA check to 17] In a moment of life-saving desperation, Conrad explained there's been a terrible misunderstanding and that he is just a reporter wanting to get a scoop on Dr. Apollonaire.

Conrad is disarmed, captured, and taken on board. They gag and bound him while the ship pulls away from the dock. In the ensuing interrogation he suffered 6 points of damage.

[WIS 11 vs CC 17] Damn. They break him! He spills the beans about being a P.I. hired by Janet Reeves-Dawson.

[last Fate point spent for Providence Smiles - plot break...] The ship is stopped and searched by the port authority.

Wrap-up: The crew turned Conrad over, accusing him of killing the two crewmen whose bodies were also on board. Conrad claims self-defense and will be held for manslaughter trial. Wow. Unlucky Lou Conrad is going to be out of the picture for a while! Meanwhile, Dr. Apollonaire was nowhere to be found. Apparently, he managed to evade any tangle with the authorities.

The dice were dreadful, but this was really fun! Conrad didn't roll higher than a 10 on anything and had one imploding failure. If not for Fate points, he'd be dead, but he is all out of Fate now.

And Janet Reeves-Dawson is in grave danger...

So you see, this is not about pulp heroes blowing away Doom monsters, first person shooter style. This is pulp setting where Doom monsters will eventually be a problem. I'm curious to see where it goes. As evidenced by the first scene, I have no idea.

SCENE 2: January 1923, Quest Symposium, Los Angeles

Janet Reeves-Dawson kept a low profile through holidays. After the debacle in San Francisco, she turned her attention back to writing and focused on her presentation for the Quest Symposium, sponsored by the Rowett Research Institute. John Quiller Rowett himself - the sponsor of the Shackleford Antarctic Expeditions - was expected to be in attendance.

At the symposium, Janet took in several lectures and kept fastidious notes. The concentration helped her tune-out psychic static that could easily prove unsettling. As an attractive, young, and wealthy widow, she drew far more attention than she ever wanted, but when it was not bothersome, she could use the advantages to make an acquaintance. Between speakers she engaged in some selective mingling.

[Psychic Senses 27 vs CC 17] Whoa. As she brushed past a stranger in the concourse, she suddenly got a very bad feeling. She made a mental note of the man; his frame was lanky, brown hair slicked-back, thin mustache, and a dull blue-gray suit.

Two hours later, it was Janet's turn to present her latest white paper, A Thousand Isolations.

[CHA 23 vs CC 15] The presentation went very well, despite the disturbing presence of the lanky stranger. She still had the same creepy feeling. It was no coincidence that he was here, watching her.

She continued mingling for another hour before beckoning an attendant to take a note to her chauffeur. The note instructed him to go back to the Dawson Estate and bring back the guard named Holt. She thought he was big enough to make an impression.

She stayed in the thick of the social scene for an hour meeting a few interesting people and more than a few annoying men. Opting not to talk openly about the Occidental Explorer's Society here, she tucked away contacts for the future.

Janet did take a brief opportunity to introduce herself to Mr. Rowett in whom she sensed an undercurrent of trouble - personal melancholy - or so it seemed. She dared not asked, and so kept the discussion brief. During this time, Janet also noticed the lanky man talking to another fellow whom she also deemed suspicious.

When Holt Sadler walked in, she easily noticed him long before he found her. He was an affable oaf who would run through a brick wall if asked. She took him aside and explained about the suspicious men. Janet wrapped-up her social agenda and they departed with the chauffeur in her favorite Duesenberg.

It had been a good evening, but she still had that uneasy feeling and thus she was only a little surprised when all four tires on the "Duesy" popped! The sound of metal debris under the car was followed by hissing.

[DEX/driving -2 (Natural 1 -3 imploding)] The chauffeur wrestled the wheel but they swerved off the road!
[1d10 for magnitude of the crash…. 9!] and into a thick tree trunk! Luckily, the vehicle's current speed was down to 1 at impact, so 1d10 damage to all occupants. 6 damage to Janet (she's KO'd) and the chauffeur (he's dead), and 9 damage to Holt! Oh no!

A rattled Holt stumbles out of the vehicle and is met by the two shady men from symposium. Instinctively, he goes for his sidearm.

[Initiative: Holt 9, Other bad guy 3, Lanky-guy 4] Way to go Holt! He pulls his revolver and fires!

[Holt 12 vs AC 12] Got him! [Damage 6] He's hurt but stays on his feet.
[Holt 7 vs AC 12] missed! Glass shatters across the street.
[Other bad guy 14 vs AC 12] Holt is hit! [Damage 1] Lucky! The shot grazed his left hip.
[Other bad guy 2 vs AC 12] Not even close.
[Lanky guy 11 vs AC 12] A close miss as the bullet punches a hole in the sheet metal of the Duesenburg

[Initiative: Other Bad guy 6, Lanky guy 2, Holt 2]
[Other bad guy 19 vs AC 12] oh crap... [Damage 7] The deadly shot spills Holt to the ground.

The two bad guys grab the unconcious Janet, place her in their waiting car, and speed off into the night!

Man.... So far this has gone horribly wrong for the heroes, but it is very intriguing and unpredictable. Two allied NPCs are dead, Janet is captured, and Conrad sits in a San Francisco jail. And it all comes down to two bad rolls.

The next day, the shootout and kidnapping of Janet Reeves-Dawson was a major headline in the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner.

Janet awoke, blindfolded, gagged, and bound. She quickly deduced that she was in the trunk of a car. Recalling the wreck, she took a blind inventory, realizing that her whole body ached and that her arm was bleeding. She struggled against her bonds in vain and then decided to control her breathing, emotions, anxiety, using the techniques that Dr. Delantz had taught her. Before long, she was in a deep calm, healing trance. In such a state, she was only vaguely aware of the car moving again, or her being carried from the car and tied to a straightback chair.

[Meditation 29, natural 20 + 1 exploding vs CC 18] She heals 2 hp in 4 hrs

Janet is in better shape than she lets on, but she pretends to come around after the long trance and travel. The blindfold had been removed and soft orange light filtered through sheer curtains. It seemed an odd place for an interrogation, she thought. This appeared to be the interior of a clean white southwestern style mansion. She did not recognize the man watching her and she could hear footsteps clicking on the tile floor behind her, approaching the room.

A smooth voice addresses her in french-accented english, "Welcome back to the living Ms. Reeves-Dawson." expecting no reply, he walked around to her field of view. It was Antoine Apollonaire, reknown philosopher and theoretical physicist, author of several controversial books on the study of aether. Off the record, he was also linked to many powerful and mysterious people.

She searched his eyes and dove into his mind. [Telepathic Probe 27 vs CC 21] He's the real deal - Apollonaire - and he does not wish to do her any harm. That's some consulation.

He nodded for his man to remove the gag and recited some of what he already knew about her. Mr. Apollonaire rhetorically reasoned why she would be interested in his activities. And when the gag fell away, he was direct.

"When I was last in California, you even hired a private eye to track me. Why?"

Her tongue numb and dry and her jaws cramping, she took some time before answering. "Water?" she croaked.

His man obliged and they went ahead an untied her wrists as well, indicating that Apollonaire did not feel threatened by her.

After a couple of minutes to compose herself, she finally answered, "You are a recondite figure among intellectual circles." she started.
"Hmmph. Spoken like a writer." he interjected.
"And... As a writer and explorer of the paranormal and unknown...", she continued, appealing to his ego and interests...

[CHA/diplomacy 23, including 1d6 Fate vs CC 21] Janet went on to disclose that she saw him as the potential subject of a book or an article. The P.I. was just a friend in whom she trusted in the San Fran area. She apologized for things going awfully wrong. And she could tell that Apollonaire believed her.

After a lengthy discussion, she was given fresh clothes and made a guest of the house. She had a wonderful breakfast in her room and fell fast asleep.
