Firefly RPG

Post by kreider204 »

Just announced, a new / another Firefly RPG from MWP.

http://www.margaretweis.com/

I'm guessing it'll use the later, more polished version(s) of the Cortex rules. Definitely looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Yes according to Margaret it will be Cortex+, man I would love to do some work on it.

As I'm reading this, Serenity is on in the background. Shiny!

It's clearly a sign that you should buy more RPG products. ;)

I thought that the press release was really strange, since it sounded like MWP had just for the first time ever gotten the okay to do a Firefly RPG. It's sort of as if they forgot that they did one a few years ago.

I don't know much about the difference between Cortex and Cortex+, but it pains me a bunch to have to re-buy all of the Firefly stuff because they are redoing the whole thing.

Or am I missing something here?

I didn't buy it the first time, not sure I will this time either If I had, and considering how much better they have gotten at building things with the CORTEX system, I'd definitely buy the new one as well.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

It is new. They've never done a Firefly game before. You might be thinking of the Serenity game they put out, though.

;)

It's mostly a matter of new licensing (Universal for Serenity, Fox for Firefly), which I suspect explains the tone of the press release. Having said that, as I understand it, Serenity was one of their first Cortex games, and they hadn't worked out the kinks yet, so I'm guessing this will be like a Firefly/Serenity 2nd (and hopefully much improved) edition.

I just had a Firefly marathon on Netflix, so I am all about the release of this game. Unfortunately, it is hard to find anyone who wants to play this genre in my neck of the woods.

Pretty much what I was going to say. There are subtle differences though that make the two licenses different. One is characters. Going by memory (Which is a scary thing.) I don't think that The Operative or Mr. Universe were in Firefly. Fairly major players in the movie that won't be in the Firefly game. (Pretty confident that Mr. Universe was not in Firefly. Fairly confident about The Operative. In the end I don't want to watch all of the series, again, from my boxed set to confirm.)

I'm sure there are other things that I did not really notice between the two, but I figured there would never be a Firefly rpg and I'm no in the habit of "noticing" differences between two different mediums of the same subject matter. (Unless it is book/comic I read → movie/television.)

I'm the same way. My local game group is almost 100% into fantasy gaming and has very little interest in Firefly. Funny, since many of them have watched the series and say they really like it; they just don't seem to want to role-play it.

Honestly, I can't decide if a new Firefly game is a good idea, or if I should just dust off Classic Traveller from the 1970's. Firefly is mostly about dudes with old projectile guns wandering around on a space ship they can't really afford, which sounds pretty Traveller-like to me. :D

That or pick up Mongoose Traveller (it's like an updated CT).

Yeah, updated or revised. I use Mongoose as my over all core and use whatever article or supplement material I love from Classic or MegaT. Like when building ships I use the fully errata'd MegaT rules.
