Purchasing C&C products here vs home location ?
Purchasing C&C products here vs home location ?
Greetings,
I'm really interested in the C&C system and I'm wondering what would be the difference in terms or final price and delivery if i bought then here online vs ordering at my local RPG shop located in Quebec, QC, Canada.
I must proceed with an order because they don't have any stock in my city. The closest other selling point is Montreal, which is like a 2 hours car ride (not sure either if they have in stock).
Any help ?
Thank you !

Right now they are having the "Grab Santa's Sack" sale. The savings, especially if you buy a large amount, will beat most, if not all, deals you can find in Canada.
Its on their website, I'll go look for the link and post it here for you.

Welcome to the Crusade!
If you reside in 'la belle province', you have a couple of options which may be less expensive that ordering directly from the US.
You could place an order from 'Le Valet d'Coeur' they have the books at around $24 CDN each but shipping would only be $5. Their online store:
www.levalet.com
Another option is Amazon.ca -- that's where I first bought my set. The only problem may be is that they don't immediately have them in stock as of right now.
Another option I like is Noble Knight games... they offer a bit of a price break on the books and... all in all (with USPS Air Letter shipping) it would come to about 49 USD which is about 57 CDN. Keep in mind that with this option, you don't pay taxes where I assume you would if you ordered from Le Valet (the GST anyways). Taking that into account Noble Knight or Le Valet would be around the same price (give or take a dollar). The advantage with Noble Knights is that you also have the option of Paypal. The advantage with Le Valet is that it'll probably take 2-3 days to receive your package where as it will take up to a week with Noble Knights.
Despite what I say... double check the prices at Noble Knight first... based on what is in your cart, you can check the shipping calculator to get the exact prices which will vary from postal code to postal code and they also offer multiple shipping options.
Here is the web address for Noble Knight Games:
http://www.nobleknight.com/
On a final note: You might also find the 1st printing and 2nd printing editions of the book. They are basically the same but the 2nd printing is far better organized than the first.
Hope this helps!

Check out the sale, read the terms and conditions carefully, because if you buy a certain value or higher you can request what you get.

Drex, good to see you again.
I'd go with Treebore's recommendation. Santa's sack is a heck of a good deal. Although moriarty's recommendation of Amazon.ca isn't a bad one, they tend to run out, plus you don't get as much bang for your Canadian buck through them at this time.

That's a good question... but I think part of it is relative. That... and the fact that there are some options unavailable across the border.
From where I live, a Global Priority envelope is $7.95 from Noble Knight Games (and where ever they are based from) to Ottawa, Canada. The other day, I checked to see about shipping a book from Montreal to Ottawa and it seemed to cost almost as much with Canada Post (Regular). I should point out that Ottawa is a 2 hour drive away from Montreal. The weird thing is that I have family that live 30 minutes outside Montreal and shipping that book to that same address was more expensive!
There is an option called Media Mail (or something like that) in the States that seems considerably cheaper than other options (and quicker than regular surface mail) but it seems to be only available within the States.
Surface Mail seems to be the cheapest... but also takes the longest. I generally prefer paying a couple bucks more to get it to my doorstep quicker.
I really dunno but I can say one thing... NEVER SHIP 'UPS' to send things up to Canada. There is always a brokerage charge which may sometimes be even MORE than the shipping (or even the product) itself!

however, IMO, the advantage of going with a UPS or Fedex type of service is that the product WILL get delivered. I've had too many ordered items never reach me to suspect it's customs holding things up and not the postal service.
My guess, is that there is a duty being charged and the product is not getting released until the duty is paid, thus it languishes in customs forever and I get to complain to either Steve, or Rob Kuntz or others about why I can't get my materials
in the past I had preferred to order direct from the Trolls, but I'm slowly changing my mind on this. I'm guessing that paying the 20-30% premium of ordering direct from a game store is worth it if only to get the product the first time...
its frustrating...
Cheers,
J.

*chuckles* It has to do with the availability of prescription meds in canada that are a 10th of the cost here. High shipping is supposed to discourage that. It doesn't, but thats one theory. ^_~`

Hey Drex, good to see you!
Yeah, the mailing costs both to and from Canada are weird.... I'd suggest getting a large order (if you can afford it) so as to make shipping worthwhile.

I know that when you ship to Canada and it weighs more than a pound you HAVE to fill out a customs form. If the US companies are shipping large orders to you (over one pound) and not filling out a customs form declaring what the merchandise is, that will hold it up considerably.
As for why Canada costs so much more, that is the difference in how the respective postal systems have been administered/regulated by our respective governemnts over the years.
Last I heard the US still has the cheapest mailing service in the world. I know that it is true with the countries I have received mailed products from. Some have had to be mailed by UPS rather than their own local mail (theft issues are a major concern in Thailand and most of Africa).
Australia is the closest to the US so far in cost. The cost of England I think is mostly due to the value of the pound. I just remember that even adjusting for that they are still more expensive, but not by a lot.

I've received a variety of things from the US, shipped by a variety of different methods. I've yet to encounter any shipper who was fully aware of all the methods available.
I have an envelope handy here in my desk which was used to ship a 1st ed PHB via USPS airmail from Louisiana to Toronto. It cost $5.05.
I've seen some other options too - there are some flat-rate (carboard) "Global Priority Mail" envelopes that are about $7 flat rate to Canada. IIRC, it's just about exactly the right size for an RPG book (9" x 12" or maybe a bit bigger) and has a weight limit around 3-4 pounds. This is a good option for thicker RPG books, or multiple thin RPG books and/or modules.
US "parcel" rates to Canada are completely insane, and are scaled by weight. If your shipment can fit into ANY other carrier classification, avoid "parcel" at all costs.
For example, a 1 pound "parcel" shipped airmail to Canada costs FOURTEEN DOLLARS. A 16 ounce letter (of exactly the same size and shape) costs $3.95. Uh... gee, which one would you pick?
And yet most folks want to ship a parcel, so they go to the post office and say "parcel", and they promptly get nailed with the most expensive option.

I tell them what in the box. Books=media rate, rocks="normal", as do most other things. Hardly anything I have dealt with has needed to be labled parcel, such as pieces of furniture.

Try to see if "La Librairie Donjon" store in Quebec has some C&C books. Unless that's where you've looked before. I haven't been to "Le Valet" for a while so I can't say if they have some C&C books left. I live farther than Montreal, but I was able to convince the hobby store in my little hometown to order C&C stuff, and they did. So after a 10-min walk, I can happily buy my C&C stuff without worrying about the darn shipping cost anymore.
ZW.
Hey Drex. I'll shout another "welcome" here. Glad to hear you're going to give C&C a try.
Enjoy the game,
Rhu.
