Treebore,
my review of the Teratic Tome (from the blog and RPGNow)
Wow.
Simply f'n wow.
The Teratic Tome is a monster manual of sorts for OSRIC - that's if you took Lovecraft, Barker, King and our own James Raggi , put them in a blender with the urine of a virgin and performed some unholy rituals that shall forever remain nameless.
The art is amazing. The art is disturbing. The art has lots and lots of boobs, and at least one female-like monster with the following accurately portrayed:
Where its genitals should be, it sports a glistening mass of foot-long tentacles that end in barbs and hooks. Its skin smells of lavender.
There is so much in here that I want to drop into my AD&D 1e / OSRIC romp through Rappan Athuk - thankfully BTB went out after the first session
The descriptions are great. They literally have story hooks right in them for the most part. The default world that these creatures frequent must be one notch worse than the 3e Midnight Campaign.
I felt disturbed reading parst of this and uncomfortable in others, much like a good horror fiction novel. And yet I kept flipping the virtual pages. Like an addict. There can be no higher praise.
The price of $6.66 is total appropriate.
Apparently Raf is giving a PDF copy of Roll XX to all who comment, is giving away 3 print copies of TT and 3 PDF copes of TT AND is lowering the price of the TT PDF based on the number of comments the post on monday (or the following monday) gets.
In case you didn't notice, there is an adventuring party on that cover...

I think I read your review before, just with Monstrosities and the S&W version of Tome of Horrors I haven't felt a need to buy this as of yet.

this was Raph's update, which i added to the original blog post:
Don't buy the Teratic Tome until after the contest! First of all, you might win a free print copy, or a free PDF, if you're one of the lucky winners.
Second, the minute the contest starts, I'm dropping the price of the Teratic Tome PDF (which is currently at $6.66) by a whopping $2.16 (because 216 is 6 cubed, hail the Dark Master), and for each person that participates in this contest, I drop the price by another two cents.
Therefore -- if 100 people participate, then when it's over, the Teratic Tome PDF will go from $6.66 to $2.50, which isn't so bad. And that's a permanent markdown. Hardcover will also be discounted, not sure how much yet (got to do some lipstick-math on the cocktail-napkin, I'll get back to you). Even if you already have it, by chiming in, you're dropping the price for anyone else who wants it.
Also!
If you participate, you automatically get a free PDF of Roll XX or Roll XX: Double Damage, and you could also win print copies of those books, or Teratic Tome (or ViewScream, if you're into that kind of thing), just for talking about your favorite character death. Is that cool? Yes it is.
It should be a blast. Fingers crossed that the proof copy of SlaughterGrid is error-free. And that I can figure out an easy way to get all these PDFs and print copies to people afterwards.
(as an aside, I find I can never have too many monster books - it helps to keep my player's on their toes

I can vouch for the "holy crap what a cool monster book!" factor, as I own a hardback copy. His "XX" books are amazing too.

Cover is fantastic and feels like an AD&D cover (which I know was the intent with the font and all). Great job.

You know, the cover is nice. The artwork is great. The Teratic Tome is pretty damned cool. But am I the only one who is sick of the gonzo shit in so many fantasy pieces of art in the past 10 years? Sure, there was some of that in the old days (Manual of the Planes), but this gonzo, big-hulking, super insanity stuff is out of control in my opinion and one of the things that makes modern fantasy RPGs seem like super-hero stuff rather than classic fantasy adventures.

Final Fantasy more than WoW. Yep. We're showing our age. The only punky, anime looking stuff we had in our day was reruns of Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, and maybe Robotech. I digress. This old Star Wars, Hobbit, James Bond, classic Doc Who, Star Trek, Indy Jones, D&D guy doesn't like that FF nonsense! *whittles a piece of wood and spits through my teeth* lol.
Re: Strongest "COOL!!" factor I've seen as an RPG cover in..
Considering the creature is 70 to 100 feet tall, I think the sword, etc... is appropriate. Those tiny little adventurers to the bottom and left are likely about to die.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

No judgement against the tome. I haven't checked out the link yet. Just an old man's rant about the style of WOW and Final Fantasy (in particular). You Gundam kids off of my lawn! Lol

Actually, they were pretty cool. I only used Gundam in an attempt to make humorous curse word humor (and failed at it). Gundam looked cool, Final Fantasy...not so much.

A little part of me just died slightly. I being of a slightly younger generation (That’s right I'm only a quarter of a century) grew up with Final Fantasy. Ultimately it was what really got me into RPGs and granted these are for consoles it was the seed implanted in me that got me to try tabletop gaming. On top of that it also, along with the fantasia movies, Final Fantasy gave me an appreciation for classical music and going to orchestra concerts and symphonies.tylermo wrote:Actually, they were pretty cool. My friend and I went to the (And this is one of my biggest fan boy moments of all time) Distant worlds concert in chicago on december 7th this past winter. In case you don't know, Distant Worlds is the music from the Final Fantasy Seires with an Orchestra behind it and a projector onto a giant screen showing game clips and other features from the games to the music. Just a tad bit of history, Final Fantasy the original game was released December 17th 1987, I was born December 8th 1987. So this concert was the day before my 25th birthday and 10 days for the 25th birthday of Final Fantasy, as seeing that they didn't have another concert planned till January this was their birthday celebration for the game and I was there celebrating my birthday and it was so awesome to see Nobuo Uematsu with a full Orchestra sign Happy Birthday and in my arrogrant little head I pretended part of it was for me

Don't let us rain on your parade. You love what you love, just like we do. We can't always explain why we love what we do, or why we don't like what we don't like. The important thing is what matters to you.
Heck, people claim Synnibar is among the worst RPG's of all time, doesn't keep me from loving it.

They had a video game music concert at GenCon 2009-2011. I went to the one in 2012 and it was very awesome. As you might imagine, about 1/3 of the entire 3 hour concert was music from the Final Fantasy series. Like Distant Worlds, this concert was a rock concert with the whole Indianapolis Symphonic orchestra playing behind it. Totally cool.Dracyian wrote:My friend and I went to the (And this is one of my biggest fan boy moments of all time) Distant worlds concert in chicago on december 7th this past winter. Don't worry about that Tree, I will probably be still booting up the playstation when I'm 80 in the nursing home just to play some JRPGs for nostalgia and fun. TO me some of the stories are just so eloquent and moving. Its just part of me wishes that others could share in the enjoyment and happiness that I got from those games. It nots that I'm sad because people don't like it, I'm sad because people can't just pop their final fantasy 8 disc into their game consel and drown out the woes of reality. I understand that most if not all of us have something *cough* castles *cough* to help drown out the reality but you know just want to share lol, I got all A's in preschool.
Re: Strongest "COOL!!" factor I've seen as an RPG cover in..
December 87?? I was in 11th grade. Nursing home here I come. BTW, sounds like a cool concert.

Heh, in 87 I was legal drinking age, even without the "grandfather clause" which allowed me to drink since I was 18. Plus it was only my 3rd year of gaming.

Which reminds me, I need to dig out my old Top Secret stuff from my parents' house. Every other old game, my brother & I dug out when we started playing again in 2000. Playing Star Frontiers with my son a couple months ago was a nice scratch to the nostalgia itch, too.

Me RR? Never! Just ask my players how "all over the place" my games can get, and I am the same way about any thread I start. I don't care where the thread goes, as long as we converse. Only thing I "require" is everyone stay polite, which is one of the biggest reasons I like this forum, the vast majority of us stay polite.
The old Atari console was in my house hold too, but I was never that into them. I much preferred going outside, play football, go swimming, go fishing, etc... Heck, I spent so much time at the beach and in the water I don't even think of the Summers being hot when I was young. Just a lot of fun.
