Huzzah to the Troll Lords

Post by jdizzy001 »

I am 6 sessions into a C&C campaign as gm, dm, ck, narrator, story teller, provider of plot, etc…. and I just wanted to say I really enjoy the system. Though a part of me misses feats and ability increases every 4 levels, it is very nice to just sit down and play a character. I don't have to worry about missing some crucial step to complete an optimized fighter, rogue or whatever. The lack of options (lack of feats/skills) seems to leave a hole in the game at times, but the +/- 2 rule of thumb makes up the difference as does … STORY!

Somewhere between OD&D and D&D 4E we lost sight of the story and D&D became a numbers crunching game. Kudos to the troll lords for returning to a simpler time but keeping some of the innovative ideas like ascending AC ;) .

Great to hear you are enjoying C&C. Great to hear your focus has gone from system to story. Remember though, If you want feats you can use them. In a few settings we use "advantages" which are just feats with a slower progression.

And If you want to allow ability scores to raise every 4 levels, Its your game.

Another great thing about C&C, As I like to say. 1E sensibility with 3E math.

I agree with Rhu, Rigon, and Ronin (the 3 R's?) and welcome you to the crusade. C&C has (to me) all of the advantages of 3E blended together with the simplicity of 1E.

And if there is a rule you like from elsewhere (you mentioned feats, etc) just add it in -- the system is versitile enough to handle almost anything.

Me either. I ran a few 3.5 games and people followed their experience points faithfully because it lead to another kewl power. It seemed that it affected game play in that the clock watching devolved into fighting each and every monster that crossed their path, throwing caution to the wind even though I put in a monster that over powered the group. They had the mentality that they were invincible and I that would never put in a monster they couldn't kill. Retreat was never an option, nor was attempting to talk to them. Don't know if there was Uruk-hai blood in the characters.

Plus the long, long battles and the strategic miniatures was not my cup-o-tea. I like free form battles where I use narration and memory to place everyone that is in the battle. The flow of the story is more important to me than having battles broken down to every minutia.

This is not "Bad-wrong-fun". There are tons of people who enjoy Pathfinder and D&D, this is a personal preference and why I've stuck with C&C. The simple and modular rules allow you to shape the game you want with very little chance of breaking the system.

The Trolls designed C&C, by making the rules kind of bare boned, so you could easily house rule things that allow you to play the style of game that you like.

Me, I like to play RAW for the simple fact I don't want to put in the time to convert anything. C&C products have so many rpg books that I really don't need to go outside the books they have to add this or that.

Glad your having such a good time!

If you really miss feats and attribute progression you can always add them or some kind of variant to them. You can look at Omote's house rules, which I believe he always has linked to his posts, in which he has added a limited number of feats to his games, you can check out my house rules in the online gaming forum where I have turned feats into SIEGE checks, Rigon's are in this very forum, and are linked in his post above, and so on.

Same with attributes, do it as it is done in 3E, or come up with some other system like mine, which is not posted in my house rules, but essentially I require them to have "time off" from adventuring, which gives me a lot of control as to how often they can try to increase attributes. They need a month to dedicate to training one single attribute, and must succeed at a SIEGE check to gain it. CL is determined by the score they are trying to achieve -10. So if they are going from a 13 to a 14 the CL is 14-10= 4. If it is from a 6 to a 7 the CL is 7-10= +3 on their roll, because I think it is easier to increase your attributes when they are real low. Realistic? I think so, based on my rehabilitation, etc... I only allow them to go to 19. Beyond that will require magic help of some kind, whether items, a pool, wish, etc... I also pin a GP cost to this, to reflect needed gear, books, healthy eating, etc... I now do a base of 50 GP per month +50 GP per positive modifier their next attribute score will give them, maxing out at 200 GP per month at +3 for 18 and 19. I also still allow each failed month to give them a cumulative +1 on their SIEGE check for the following month. So if they fail 3 months in a row they will get a +3 on the roll for the 4th month.

I prefer to not pollute the C&C goodness with feats and other such 3e-isms.

Like I said, I sometimes miss feats. Sadly, feats slowly became nothing more than ways to squeeze out extra atk and dmg bonuses. Which then became manditory feat taxes (4e) which you would have to take in order to keep up with the scaling monsters. If I were to add feats to a C&C campaign it would be non-combat feats. These feats usually just offer a +2 bonus to a certain skill, and if that is the case I would just allow a PC to argue they should be allowed a bonus to their roll because of X reason (character background, situational modifier, etc). So in the end, I don't see a reason to add feats back in as I oppose combat bonus feats and non-combat feats are usually skill based which I would award anyways based on a good PC arguement. Regardless, Yea for the Troll Lords, and thanks for the discussions.

Some I think make sense, especially to spice up the fighter, such as Cleave. But I would add that as a Class Ability, not use a Feat system. Except maybe to allow other fighter types, Bard, Monk, Knight, Paladin, and Ranger, to have the possibility to learn it during play. Which is what I do.

First, JD, welcome, glad you have found the game and enjoy it!

Personally, I fall into the not a fan of feats camp. However,

Rgr that, C&C can easily be adjusted as you like and enjoy playing. There are lots of house rules and ideas floating around that you can mine for your own. Just remember, have fun!!!
