Any Forgotten Realms experts out there?

Post by Corrilwynn »

I grew up GMing AD&D 2e and later D&D 3 in the Forgotten Realms. Then one day, I began reading the original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard. I was greatly inspired by them, and I realized I vastly preferred Sword & Sorcery over High Fantasy. I was put off by the overabundance of magic, meta-plot, and the overabundance of uber-powerful npcs in the Realms, and ended up selling my large collection of Forgotten Realms stuff. Here I am, years later, and I miss the Realms, most likely for nostalgic reasons. I read that the AD&D 1e box set was similar to the World of Greyhawk box set in feel, and it wasn't until 2e and the Time of Troubles that Forgotten Realms began changing in ways that I now do not prefer. I'm building my rpg collection back up again while I can, and I'm looking for help on Forgotten Realms.

Can somebody tell me which Forgotten Realms products detail the setting pre-time of troubles? I ordered the 1e campaign setting, but I'm also wanting to get some accessories/adventures. Are there any AD&D 2e products that would be a good fit for a 1e 'feeling' Forgotten Realms game?

I appreciate any help!

Let me check my book shelf ... (my stuff from Florida got here a few weeks ago, and though it's unpacked, it is ALL jumbled together).

Like you, I loved the original setting, but hated the continued power creep and was lost by the "time of troubles". With that, everything I have will be before that.

I'll try and post a list tomorrow.

Edit *** Oh yeah, Lord Seurek is a huge fan of FR, so he will be one to talk to!

Thanks for your help. I found these 2 blog posts, which were helpful.

So far from my research it looks like the 1e campaign setting, FR1-6 (minus FR4 "The Magister"), and N5 "Under Illefarn" are recommended old school Realms products.

Those would be my recomendations for a 1e FR campaign. I'd also include FR 7-10. They have a 1e feel to them. You can also look at this to get an idea of what you would like to get. Basically, anything pre-1993/94 fits in with "old" FR.

By the way, I love the Realms. I've been a player in 2e FR during the hayday of 2e AD&D and I've run 1e FR using C&C off and on for the last couple of years. Right now, I'm actually running a 2e FR adventure from Dungeon magazine but have it set in 1e FR.
