Non TLG books you just love to use with C&C

Post by gabriellyon »

So what non TLG books do you find add real value to C&C? I have been using the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and recently picked up the DarkSun boxed set both of which are being used with C&C. What about monster manuals or spell books? Any other resources you think are top notch which slot in nicely with the C&C rules?
Just to make it clear, I still love the trolls. Cheers mates

Arduin and The Arcanum come to mind first, so much so my conversions have not been deleted from this boards... yet.

1e AD&D Books
2e AD&D Monster and "Complete" Books (for critters and flavor, respectively, plus the 2e Thief skills system from the PHB)
Greyhawk material from across editions 1 - 3.5.
D&D Cyclopedia

The 2E Monster Manual and a lot of 1E and a few 3E modules. I also find myself referencing the 1E DMG a fair amount. Then there are settings I have used, so Wilderlands and Ravenloft.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Definitely my 2e Monstrous Manual. I also look up some magic items in both the 1e and 2e DMG since I use a lot of 2e mods.

+1, I use Monstrous Manual instead of C&C manual.
There are two novels that can change a 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Which Monsters Manual 2nd edition do you use? It looks like there were a number of them. I remember having the 3 ring binder when we used to play but the pages had a bad habit of falling out and it was impossible to keep organized.

Tome of Horrors Complete
Various modules and setting information.

When I start up my Birthright campaign I will be using many of those books as I do not wish to convert many of them. In particular the BR campaign setting and the Books of Magecraft and Priestcraft.

Grimtooth's Traps.

I often tone down their lethalness but their very good at giving me ideas when you are sick of the same old falling pits, poisoned dart sorts of traps.

I'm brand new to C&C and have yet to really get into a group playing it, but no matter what RPG I've played in or GMed, the 1st ed. DMG, Wilderness Survival Guide, 2nd ed. "Campaign Sourcebook and Catacomb Guide" splat book, and the D&D Rules Cyclopedia have always been books I refer to often for ideas and inspiration.

I don't have any of those 3 ring binder thingies. I have the hard back Monstrous Manual. I think it was all of the 3 ring binder stuff in one hardback.

Same here. In 1989, I purchased the 2E binder with the original set of pages for the Monstrous Compendium. I think I bought the GH set, too. Eventually, I bought the Monstrous Manual so (I think) I left the binder at my parents' house. I should go over there and look for it. I know Mom and Dad aren't using it.

Yeah, I bought all those as well, then when they did the hard cover and soft cover versions I bought those too. As well as the new reprints. I really, really like how they did the monsters in 2E.

I see a number of people listed the 1st ed DMG as a go to reference book. What is the advantage of this book over the CKG? Aside from some errors with weights and carrying capacities in the CKG, it seemed to cover anything campaign wise I figured I might run into. Thanks to everyone who recommended the 2nd edition MM. I picked up the new reprint this weekend and am very pleased with the expanded selection and detail.

The city encounter tables (including the famous wandering harlot tables!).

I've recently got back into C&C after a couple of years on other systems and picked up the CKG and although it has some useful stuff/advice I can't see it replacing the 1E DMG as a general reference.

I am tempted to pick up a copy of the new 2E MM as my original is getting a bit fragile. My C&C game consists mainly of the PHB + the original AD&D DMG (esp for magic items), MM, MM2 & FF (mainly as I have decided I prefer the weaker 1E giants giving D12 for HD rather than more HD as they did in 2E) but also do use the 2E MM at times as well.

I have ported a LOT of stuff over 4 campaigns over the last 6 years, and used a lot for reference...

Classic mods - B2 Keep on the Borderlands was a smash dropped into Aihrde at the outset of a campaign...
X1 Isle of Dread, have used big parts or sections of S2 White Plume Mountain, S3 Expedition to Barrier Peaks, I6 Dwellers of Forbidden City, C1 Lost Shrine, Castle Amber (the "French" alternate world made a big appearance, though I changed the Chateau a good bit)....

Certainly I have used the old DMG, 1e Monster Manual I & II for some slightly different takes, 3e material like the Epic Players handbook for the cross-planar city of Union, I used the 3e City of Sharn material and remade into Malystare on my on world...

The biggest would be Greyhawk - we are in mid-upper levels of a Greyhawk campaign and I have used the Living Gazatteer and the late 2e "The Adventure Begins" book by Moore, as well as the Scarlet Brotherhood sourcebook, and other Greyhawk stuff from that era.

I'm afraid mine are going to fall apart (at the binding) every time I pick them up! I bought the new printing and am having a tough time deciding if I should keep using my originals until they do fall apart, and then take them to Staples to be comb bound for continued use, and keep the new printings on the shelf; OR, keep the old printings on the shelf and just start using the new ones.

I love the 1E DMG! In part because of familiarity, but also because it is just crammed full of useful stuff. The primary difference between it and the CKG is probably the monster encounter charts, tables for randomly building a dungeon, tables for giving NPC's (and even PC's) some "personality", rules for making Holy Water, and dozens of other bits and pieces, including rules for stacking of magic items bonus', which I still had to write into my house rules because C&C uses a few 3E bonus', such as Luck and Natural Armor.

I am not saying the CKG isn't a great book in its own right, but I still turn to the 1E DMG first.

Well I guess I will have to take a look at the 1st ed DMG and see if need to add that to my library as well.

For me, it's 1e and 2e modules. The 1st Edition DMG. The Forgotten Realms Grey Box and the '83 Greyhawk Box. The Tome of Horrors (S&W). Chaosium's Cities supplement. The Toolbox and Ultimate Toolbox supplements. The Gygaxian Fantasy series of supplements.
