friggin work firewall
friggin work firewall
im a cubicle jockey. decent job but i stare at a pc all day until there is something to fix in the labs. well, recently te definitions of our work firewall has declared trollord.com off limits due to gaming. GAMING. what do they expect me to do, work? now when i take breaks i have to look at other sights. when im at home, i have small children so trolling on the internets is not too reliable.
So, I just wanted to say i miss everyone and hopefully i havent missed too much stuff lately.

I'm sorry to hear that sir, I have yet to have that misfortune as a big chunk of my work time is spent in front of a computer.mordrene wrote:im a cubicle jockey. decent job but i stare at a pc all day until there is something to fix in the labs. well, recently te definitions of our work firewall has declared trollord.com off limits due to gaming. Have you tried going straight to the forums page? Or php browser?
Re: friggin work firewall
Lots of works remove "gaming" sites. Install a remote control program on your PC at home. Control it from work. Piggy-back yourself. I'm sure they allow "remote access" sites... or not. But if not, VPN with a proxy works the same.
Re: friggin work firewall
Just use an unregistered proxy...mordrene wrote:im a cubicle jockey. decent job but i stare at a pc all day until there is something to fix in the labs. well, recently te definitions of our work firewall has declared trollord.com off limits due to gaming. I actually have to advise against doing what serleran and Arduin recommend. Deliberately bypassing security controls - however nonsensical - can get you fired in many places.

Re: friggin work firewall
We don't have to worry about a firewall. They have a snooper program that checks our activity every 10 seconds. If we're at a site we can't justify as work related it's an automatic termination. No warnings.
I'd rather have to deal with the firewall.

Working in IT I understand all the ways you can bypass the web filtering in place, and don't do it. Check with your HR department, odds are you have an "appropriate use" policy, and usually this requires a signature to signify that you have read, understand, and will comply with it. There are many other technical reasons for not doing so as well. Usually these filters prevent access to sites that are known to distribute malware, viruses, phishing, and so on. They also prevent access to hate sites and porn which could lead to a hostile workplace or harassment charges, and yes gaming , though unfortunately that category is far to broad reaching and was originally meant to stop people from playing games, which you aren't doing on the Troll's site, but now the category has been broadened to include just about any type of gaming company.

Providing alternatives does not condone them.
Re: friggin work firewall
Serl, you are implicitly condoning the action by providing an alternative, and it makes you complicit in the action if undertaken. If someone were to take your advice, and ended up losing their job because of it, you would bear some of the responsibility.serleran wrote:Providing alternatives does not condone them.

No. Educating someone does not mean you are responsible for what they do with the knowledge. People who know how to make bullets are not responsible for those who get shot.koralas wrote:Serl, you are implicitly condoning the action by providing an alternative, and it makes you complicit in the action if undertaken. Not that it matters. There are literally millions of other sites and ways to have come across the "knowledge." Hell, some companies that even make the tools advertise them in that exact context.
If you take a risk, you are the one to blame for the outcome... not the people who said "you can do it." Choice is personal.
Re: friggin work firewall
It is, and the majority of the blame lies with the one that commits the act. However, legally, you liable for counseling somebody how to break the law. "Damn, I don't have any bullets for my gun, but I want to take out ######." "You know what, you can take a knife and stab them." You have provided counseling on how to commit the crime and are now possibly an accessory (and could be held as an accomplice in some jursdictions), or, at the least, aiding and abetting the act, both of which are liable to criminal prosecution.serleran wrote:No. Educating someone does not mean you are responsible for what they do with the knowledge. Here you have done the same thing. And while this is not an illegal activity, it is something that has consequences none the less. If the worst should happen, you bear a measure of responsibility, like it or not. And of course I already know your reply, "You don't care." That's fine, your conscience is your own.
