Determining XP from Monsters&Treasure

Post by CharlieRock »

I am having trouble understanding the book with regard to establishing XP for monsters with special abilities.
It uses a Skagg as the example. A creature with four attacks. This is allowed as a catI ability. But then it goes on as this makes the Skagg creature valued at 120 + 4/hp. The table shows that a 4HD creature with catI ability is valued at 20 + base 40 + 4/hp. Where did the other 60XP come from?

Is it each attack (4 total) is worth 20 per (4 attacks X 20 + 40 base = 120)? If so, why is the first (default) attack counted and not the default attack for every other creature?

Is the example correct and the table is off ? Is the table correct and the example is off?

A search of the forum topics did lead me to very interesting threads. However, none addressed this issue specifically.
Edit: Is this something covered in the CKG? I havn't gotten that book, yet. nudge. wink.

The CKG isn't out yet. Possibly some time in 2007.

It has been established that the chart for XP in the M&T is wrong. I bielieve the Trolls have said the example is right, but the chart is wrong.

The table is off ... well, I can work with that
Fortunately there are many examples of monsters already in the M&T ready to go with their XP pregenerated. However, that leaves out such things like a Gnoll with levels of barbarian or a spell casting gobbo. What is the formula y'all been using?

P.S. I'm going to try using the old '*' method. Where ,every * denotes a special ability and is worth extra XP. This would make the spell casting gobbo a 1HD(d6) + */lvl caster ... doh! Forgot how much each * was now ...

You have that backwards my friend. The examples are wrong, but the chart is right. The errata mentions this (for the benefit of the OP who asked what was up).

Oops! My bad, I knew one of them was off. I guessed... poorly.

Sorry CharlieRock. I should have waited for Trav to punch in with his info on this anyways. Traveller knows his C&C errata!

Good! Thanks to you both.
That makes things much easier.

P.S. I didn't find anything about that in the errata, but then again everything in the errata seems to pertain to the PHB, so maybe I'm not looking at the right one.

P.P.S. I found the errata mentioned by Traveller at his web page (where else) LoL

I just put the errata in one place. It's everyone out there (including me) who finds it all that makes the game better than it already is.

By the way Omote...

I think it's more accurately quoted:

"He chose ... poorly."

The pause makes the line.

Perhaps the best scenes of the movie!!!

True that. I suppose I should complain to IMDB, since they're the ones I pulled the quote from.

By the way, I just got a news report saying the fourth movie will be released in 2008. And Harrison Ford will still be starring, despite being 64+.

Hmm....Is it going to be called...
"Indiana Jones and the Enlarged Prostate"..?

"Indiana Jones and the Altar of Viagra"..?

"Indiana Jones and the Pompano Beach Early-Bird Lunch Special"..?

Wouldn't that "Adventures of Young Indiana Jones" be the fourth one? The one where he got his hat?

Alternatively, to determine the XP award of any C&C monster, find a proximal creature in AD&D, and divide its amount by 3.

Umm Young Indiana Jones? I refuse to recognize it in Indy lore at all.

I'll beleive it when I'm in the theater watching it. Until then, there's no Indy 4.

Given that Harrison Ford said that he was healthy enough to play the role, and given that Lucas actually confirmed the fourth Indy movie, that's good enough for me.

Of course, it could go the vaporware route....

I'm not sure that works with the higher level C&C critters. Figuring up the XP for an adult (category 7, 18HD) Red Dragon in C&C appears to give more XP then the AD&D equivalent.

Not that I find it crummy, hell. The higher level C&C dragons are scarey and deserve some XP.

Yes, dragons are an exception, as are liches. Then again, the C&C version tends to be slightly more powerful as well, so the XP award is higher overall for those particular creatures.

Yeah, I've not paid much attention to C&C dragons until lately and they are particularly nasty. I love it, dragons are supposed to be scarey.
