The Void is finally out!

Post by Treebore »

My kids and I play tested this two years in a row at Neon Con, before it became defunct, so have been looking forward to seeing the final version of this!

We really enjoyed how they mixed Cthulhu and sci fi with this.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Darn you Tree, you just made me want to spend even more money .... ;)

I'm on the fence with SciFi games, but that game sounds COOL!!!!!

I haven't done anything with this final versions, but the play tests were very memorable.

I DL'ed this, and while I havn't read much, it's Ubercool.
Ever cooler, it's "pay what you wish" so you could DL it for free or for cheap, so that's huge.

It is pretty cool. I knew it was going to have a lot of the feel of Cthulhu Tech, and it does, just different, because of the different premises of the respective settings. I am sure system will play into that too. I just need to find time to run or play this in the near future.

Does anybody know mechanically how it compares to Chthonian Stars using Traveller?

Ive been curious which mechanics would suite me the best out of those two, and I have never touched Mongoose Traveller nor any other WildFire products before.

The play tests seemed very very similar, but I will read it over to see if they changed anything since I last play test it.

The Void uses dice pools of d6's. Each 5 or 6 is one succeess. tasks/tests need between 1 and 5 succeesses. (1 easy, 2 average, 3 hard... 5 is legendary) pools come from stat + (something... skill? maybe) so you usually roll at least 2 dice. the attributes are 1-3 dots, which = dice for your pools.

so that's slick, IMO, and you won't see 18 dice in a pool like in the d6 game. (not that there's anything wrong with that).
For kicks, you could roll fudge dice and only count the + as successes and ignore the -.

The above is all off the top of my head having skimmed The Void once. I can't compare it to the others because I havn't played them. Hope that helps a bit.

I just got this in PDF. The PDF looks nice but I went crosseyed trying to figure the game out from it; the rules seem to appear randomly between long stretches of fluff. I think I'd get more out of the print version, or maybe the Quickstart, which is at RPGNow, but disappears when I try to download it.

Yeah, I only learn games from their print version. PDF's are purely a reference tool for me. Which is why I ordered a POD for this. I cannot effectively learn a new RPG from a PDF, for whatever reason, my mind does not pick it up nearly as easily as I do from print.

I'm completely the same. I think it has something to do with tactile stimulus and its relationship to memory. It was the same way when I was in school. So long as I was writing "something" in a notebook during lecture (it could be completely unrelated to the class) it seemed to stick. The best I can do with a pdf is put it into two-oage view so it looks like a book.

I too prefer real books.
but a pdf with links is good.
I sort of like the fiction mixed into the rules in The Void, but I can see how with out bookmarks that makes it harder to find things.
