White Plume Mountain - C&C/Tybor style

Post by mgtremaine »

These day after every game I run and send an email summary of the game so those who missed it can know what happened and we can keep some kind of record for everyone to see. I figured I'd share the recent game here in hopes that you, the reader, will either enjoy it or gets some ideas for your own game.

Cast:

Dink -> Gnome Illusionist 9th Level
Roan -> Elven Knight 9th Level
Indigo -> Dwarven Rogue/Wizard 9th/4th

Setup: The three characters each had their prized weapon mysteriously disappeared one night in their keep. The only clue was a highly insulting note. After much research and traveling around they track down the warrens of an ancient and crazy Gnome Wizard. Thus the stage was set....

Session 1:

Dink, Indigo and Roan entered the caves beneath the Feathered Mound and found themselves immersed in a bizarre series of chambers and caverns that can best be describe as the product of some twisted imagination. The trio came with deadly intent to reclaim their prized weapons but instead of dangerous guards they found a riddle speaking Sphinx, bizarre levers on a control panel, misty corridors, water filled pits, green slime filled water, a river flowing sand, a river that runs through the air and all manner of other strange sights.

Unsure were to go and what exactly to do the trio went from one side of the caverns to the other looking for someone to spend their fury against. But more often then naught they turned back when the setting got a little too strange. The "log ride" seemed right out, the "Petting Zoo" filled with rare Twin-Tailed Manticores seemed overly crowded, the air-lock passage was just too scary. Eventually they decided that the spinning tunnel of Vertigo was not so bad looking.

Indigo flew through the tunnel aided by his magical boots, then it was Dink's turn to slide through on a shield. Unfortunately at that moment a flaming brand was tossed from a hidden priest hole and the tunnel quickly went up in flames. Indigo pulled Dink through before she was burned to death and Roan decide to rush through the tunnel, tripping badly in the process and tumbling through. Lucky for him his armor spared him from any fire damage. A quick regroup and the party barraged into the room just it time to see a Witch casting a spell at them. A wave fear spread across them and it was too much for Indigo who turned and ran from the room, his only thought was to escape the horrible Witch. Dink and Roan continued on, with Roan attacking the lone henchman and Dink getting ready to have a battle of magic. Unfortunately the Witch cast a hold spell on Dink and the poor Gnome was held fast. Meanwhile Roan made short work of the flunky and was able to close on the Witch who seemed unable to stop the Elven Knight. She did change forms into a Weretiger but it did not help and she was bludgeoned into submission by Roan. After a time the spells wore off and Indigo and Dink were able to assist Roan dispose of the body, least she regenerate. Sadly there was no sign of their magical weapons, in fact Dink was able to determine that the entire room was under some illusion to make it appear opulent, when in reality it was quiet shabby.

So they pressed onward, turning away from the "Air Lock" doors as they termed them. Running once again through the "steam-bath" where vicious water spirits threw boiling water balloons at them. The trio headed further east and found a turnstile which drew much debate, some argument and eventual acceptance as Dink went through, not worried about how to get out. Indigo reluctantly went as well and Roan stood firm for a while confused and irritable. Perhaps the knight had a third sense of what was to come.

Beyond the turnstile they found the mud baths, a large natural cavern filled with boiling mud that fountained out of geysers at various times. Having no shortage of brains they wisely timed the intervals and dashed across the room unharmed. Beyond the mud baths they found the Crypt. Here slept and evil Vampire who happened to be wielding Xothagland the Sword of Knowledge. The vampire did his best to welcome the trio by summoning his wolf pack to help entertain, but when Roan reached for his garlic the Vampire took the time to Dominate the Knight who sadly fell under his evil spell. Roan was commanded to "throw his garlic" in the mud pool and wandered off to comply with his new master. Mean while Dink summoned a shadowy visage of Mr. Fluffy and sent the great Cave Bear against the Vampire. Occupied by the Cave Bear the Vampire was a perfect target for Indigo's rage, as the Dwarf released several power spells. He Silenced the Vampire and then dropped a powerful fireball upon him. This combined with the several blasts from Dink's wand of magic missile was enough to destroy the Vampire, unfortunately it also destroy several other things in the crypt, and left a puddle of gold and silver. At least Xothagland survived and Indigo reclaimed his sword.

Session 2:

Having recovered Xothagland the trio faced the problem of the turnstile. Roan finally remember he carried just the right item to get through this, and brought out the lyre of building which made short work of the stone tunnels. Free to move on they decided to find out what was behind the air locked doors. Another mad dash for Roan through the steam baths while the annoying little Steam Mephits threw their projectiles, it ended well with only one painful splash.

Indigo led the way in, carefully listening, checking and opening each door. Then jamming them open so they would not close and moving on to the next one. When they finally opened all three they found a huge cavern with a boiling lake, feed by a stream that also exited through a water fall down towards the lava core, the sound of hissing steam was constant as the evaporated water shot up through a steam vent. It occurred to Indigo that the steam would vent out the doors and they might have visitors from the Steam bath so the doors were quickly closed again.

In the center of this huge cavern was a strange island protected by a forcefield. In this forcefield lived a Giant Crab who had the Staff of the Stormhawk. A quick plan was discussed and the Roan and Razor took the lead, to battle the Crab, who was really, really big. [HD 15 HP 150 Ac 25 At 2 D: 5d6] In the first exchange Roan found out the those claws could deliver a pretty nasty blow and Razor was clearly overmatched but the brave Knight and his Griffon fought on. Allowing Indigo a chance to get behind the Crab and Dink enough time to figure out just how to get his staff. Dink finally made a move to retrieve it but did not move nimbly enough and the Crab nailed poor Dink with a savage blow. The fight was going to be long and ugly. Razor was dismissed before he died and Roan continue to take the brunt of the damage, while Indigo used his sword and hammer to harass the Crab's flank. In the end Roan was almost done in by the Crab who was itself and mass of broken shell and bleeding wounds. At that point Dink stepped up again and put the Crab down with a well placed Magic Missile. [Roan ended the combat with 1 hit point]

Dink reclaimed his staff and was ready to help Roan find Narmalina the Dragonbane Sword. So off they went to the western tunnels across the corridor of moving sand and south to the Manitcore pens. Here they paused and worked out a plan. Roan would summoned Barbarians from his Iron Horn of Valhalla, then use his Battle Field Dominance to improve everyones chances. A Giant Eagle and an Arrowhawk were added to the fray and a long and drawn out battle was conducted. The 10 Manticores used their tailed spikes, flight and savage attacks to try and bring down the invading force. In the End the Arrowhawk, the Giant Eagle, and 2 out 3 of the Barbarians where killed but the Trio held the field and after a period of rest where ready to see what lay beyond.

What they found was a Hobbit. A happy singing hobbit. A happy singing hobbit, who wanted to be rescued, not answer all sort of boring questions. Roan was unsure what to do, then Indigo used his racial ability of persuasion to convince the hobbit to be more honest. Yes good ole' Dwarven directness. "Get down on the ground or I'll hurt you" where the exact words Indigo used, then he tried to push the creature. Who turned out to not be a Hobbit, but rather a 10ft Angry Ogre-magi who proceeded to Cone of Cold Indigo. Suddenly magic was flying , mirrors images where popping left and right and Roan was swing his mace wildly. Qesnef the Ogre-Magi was actually outmatched and after a few rounds he tried to leave the field of battle via Gaseous Form. Indigo was not having it and drew out "ol'trusty" the well used Wand of Burning Hands to shoot magic fire into the cloud of flee gases. Sensing death was close Qesnef tried to shift back and polymorph but he never got a chance the trio killed him and claimed his treasure, including Roan's sword Narmalina.

So the Adventures decided to explore further now that they had all their items, however on the way out the "petting zoo" Efreeti started to appear behind them. A disembodied voice told them that "they have been most entertaining but it was time to give back the weapons and go on their way." By the time the trio was running up the corridor 12 Efreeti where after them. Before they could make it to the underground river 2 more where in front of them. Is was time to leave, they ran for the exit with Efreeti come from all directions. Once they made it to the surface Roan called forth the White Roc and the Adventures climb up and flew off the White Plume Mountain leaving behind a mystery, a crazy gnome, and a whole of bunch of Efreeti.
