How much RAM

My step-daughter needs a new laptop computer for college. It's been ages since I purchased a PC (probably a decade) and I'm not sure what an appropriate amount of RAM is these days. Most of the computers I am seeing come with 4 GB. Is that enough RAM? I figure she'll mostly be doing word processing, surfing the internet, and streaming videos.

If she isn't in any courses that are going to have high program requirements 4 gigs should be plenty, if she is taking computer courses above and beyond the standard office suite or upper level math or science courses you may want to go with 8 gigs of ram
