Forgive me but I cannot recall who on here gave me this idea, but whomever it was suggested that when converting monsters from D&D to C&C, in cases where they have HD with a fixed "plus" value, round up to the next die type for thier HD. Well, I've been doing that, and I think it works pretty well. So, just wanted bring this up in case anyone else wanted to use it and thank whoever it was that gave me the idea in the first place, lol.
So, a creature with 4d8+6, would become (in C&C) a 4d10 HD creature.
I have sort of a "soft rule" that if the extra "fixed" hit points are 10 or greater, I bump the HD up to D12.
C&C does not have any sort of "fixed bonus" that I have seen, am I wrong on that count? It's not perfect, but I think it's better then just dropping the bonus hit points and it's also better that adding HD (which just makes the monsters more dangerous do to higher attack values).
Monster Hit Points
Re: Monster Hit Points
I don't really worry about it, since another thing I did even before it became "official" in 3E D&D, is monsters have whatever HD and HP I want them have in order to be the challenge I want them to be. I haven't noticed a "fixed bonus" in C&C either.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Re: Monster Hit Points
It depends on how precise you want to be.
4d8+6 gives you a range of 10 to 32. 4d10 gives you a range from 4 to 40.
Personally, I'm relatively more inclined to go with having the fixed bonuses, because I like narrowing the range slightly, even though it's still pretty wide. A great many of the monsters I've made up have +1 or +2 bonuses to hit points per hit die, much like a tough PC has a constitution bonus.

Re: Monster Hit Points
I don't do that as it is only a few hit points. Not enough to jack up the HD designation which changes a lot of things in C&C given how the Siege Engine works. In D&D it only really affected the monsters to hit number...Lobo316 wrote:Forgive me but I cannot recall who on here gave me this idea, but whomever it was suggested that when converting monsters from D&D to C&C, in cases where they have HD with a fixed "plus" value, round up to the next die type for thier HD.
Re: Monster Hit Points
Usually, I just give it the old eyeball. I don't round up HD, I just tend to give them more hit points. In your example of 4d8+6, I'd give the monster something like 25-30 hit points (the average being in the 19-20 point range). That's if I just didn't use an equivalent monster from C&C.

Re: Monster Hit Points
Well I think the whole reason I started doing that was because there are monsters that have HD other than d8 (some d10, a few d12). When converting old D&D monsters, I think most just have d8, so I was going for something a little different.Rigon wrote:Usually, I just give it the old eyeball. Honestly, I think it really doesn't matter. As the CK, give 'em what you think they need for "X" encounter

True, that's why I tend to compare them to equivalent C&C monsters and try to match up their types.Lobo316 wrote:Well I think the whole reason I started doing that was because there are monsters that have HD other than d8 (some d10, a few d12).
