Your favorite module of all time?

Post by Treebore »

This is on ENWorld, but I am much more iinterested in this boards opinon, since we obviously think much more alike (we all like C&C for much the same reasons).

I imagine you are probably like me in that it is hard to name just one, let alone a few, because so many mods are great for different reasons.

Like on ENWorld I named the one I find the most fun for viscious PC death, Lich Lords by Mayfair. With Ravenloft (I 6) and Lost Caverns of Tsojanth being runner ups.

But there are tons of excellent mods over the years. Like I am really loving what I have been able to do based on TLG's A1 module (and supplemental/accompanying "A1" mods).

Then there is Castle D'Amberville, Keep on the Borderlands, Egg of the Phoenix, the Bloodstone Mine modules, Exp. to Barrier Peaks, Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun, Sabre River, Death's Ride, and many, many, more.

So can you even name a "single greatest module", let alone narrow it down to a handful?

Other great 3E only modules, IMO, are Rappan Athuk: Reloaded, Morrick Mansion, Tomb of Abysthor, Doom of Listonshire, Lost City of Barakus, Grey Citadel, Halls of the Rainbow Mage, (yes, I know they are all by Necromancer, there is a reason I am a fanboy of theirs), NeMorans Vault (Fiery Dragon), and again, there are many more I would still love to name. Coin Trilogy from Kenzer/Kalamar, Freeport modules, etc...

So can you name just a few? I obvioulsy can't.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

If I had to pick just one module of all the good ones out there (TSR, Troll Lords, Goodman Games, and Necromancer all produce/produced great ones) my all time vavorite is TSR's I1 -- The Forbidden City.

Part of this is memories I have of the module so I claim emotional attachments to this module.

Its a tie between the Temple of Elemental Evil and the Forbidden City ( of which I'm going to CK next). After that the Q' series.

I don't see how you can narrow it down to so few.

I've kept thinking about this, and the only criteria I have been able to come up with for narrowing things down is what adventure/mod has had the single most impact on my campaigns.

That would probably be Morrick Mansion. But that is because the players accpeted the lands from Lady Morrick and then developed the lands. I actually had to break out XRP's MMS: Western Europe to determine how much money they could make off of the olive oil harvest, grape harvest, etc... maintenance costs, how much money could be made from the nearby forests, how many people they would need to hire to work the lands, all that.

Apple Grove, from some Dungeon mag adventure (one about a hag and some stew she was making) is another similiar example, then Agrovale, a self willed Skeleton Warrior from another Dungeon mag adventure is another campaign fixture of mine. So is Endome (from Lost City of Barakus) and Don Eamon (from Grey Citadel), Ravenloft Castle, etc...

So I really can't think up good criteria that actually narrows my choices down for me.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

My all time favorite module woud be Nights Dark Terror (B10), from TSR. A close second is the Goblins Tooth modules from over at Dragonsfoot.

For low level; B2 Keep on the Borderlands.
For all levels, have to be Judges Guild Tegel Manor.

For Dragon Mags, Citadel of Silence was good, and The Fell Pass was also pretty good (though I have yet to actually FINISH running this).

H2 - The Mines of Bloodstone will always have a special place in my heart and it spawned off my oldest and longest continuous campaign!

I can narrow it down to three, as "best ever" as far as running straight up. All the others I have made, and needed to make, significant changes to run. The three on my "best" list are:

T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil

S1 Tomb of Horrors

and I6 Ravenloft

Of these three, the one that wins is T1-4, because, unlike the rest, it is a full-fledged campaign unto itself. It can also be used as a drop-in to ongoing games, used in pieces (ie, take the moathouse section for one series of adventures, but run something else after, and then bring back in the temple proper, or all manner of other cuts and slices...).

Almost every gamer I know remembers their first dungeon as being the best due to being a newbie and discovering how cool gaming can be. That experience can't be replicated.

For GMs there are two fond memories...the first as a player and the first GMing.

Then for the writer, there's the first written.

How do you rank one over the other? Is it based on how well it was written or how much fun everyone had?

B2 Keep on the Borderlands, most useful. That fort has appeared many, many times in many, many campaigns. Many, many replacement characters have started out in that module to catch up with a mid-level party.

I think my favorite to DM is I2 Tomb of the Lizard King. A few truly nasty monsters, a few irritating characters, a bit of a mystery, and a nasty dungeon.

Honorable mention to G2 and G3, but I have had a couple of different campaigns ended in those modules, or at least significantly altered when most characters are killed

A while back, DUNGEON magazine published a list of their top 30 modules of all time. Personally, I think they cheated by counting supermodules as one entry. Also, note that pretty much the entire list is composed of TSR products.

Suprisingly enough, my favorites are actually from the 3e era. The Age of Mortals campaign by Sovereign Press.

Key of Destiny

Spectre of Sorrows

Price of Courage

In all my years, these have provided some of the greatest gaming experiences I have had. Now that we're playing Price of Courage utilizing C&C, the enjoyment factor has gone even higher on the scale.

Epic adventure at it's best.

Two really stand out in my mind, T1-4/The Temple of Elemental Evil and S4/The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Those are two that, with a few others, everyone in my group agreed had something for everyone.

Gotta love these type of threads - fun to think about, real tough to choose an all-time favorite.

I've added many TLG's mods to my list of favs, but I'll go with the following:
TLG - The Rising Knight.
TSR - B1 In Search of the Unknown.

Both were my first time modules introducing me to the game.

Runners up -

TLG:

Assault on Blacktooth Ridge

Lion in the Ropes

Shadows of Halfling Hall

Mortality of Green

Dark Chateau

Wicked Caudron

TSR

B2 Keep on the Borderland

T1 Village of Hommlet

I3 Pharoah

I6 Ravenloft

S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth

G2 Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl

For me I always seem to come back to the following two published modules, which became the core of different campaigns - one is classic, one is 3E era that I adapted into my own simplified game system before I discovered C&C:
X1 - The Isle of Dread
The Sunless Citadel

My favorite module of all time is Shadows Over Bogenhafen, hands down. The entire Enemy Within campaign was pretty damned good with minor tweaking, actually.

For me this is pretty easy. These are in no particular order:

Rappan Athuk Reloaded

Keep on the Borderlands

Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun

Crucible of Freya

Temple of Elemental Evil

I second this. I played in a WHFRP game for several months last year and it was just fantastic. Shadows was a truly excellent module. I don't have any WH books or mods, but I think I will pick them up this year! 8)

Soooooo many games so many good times

The GDQ run holds a special place in my heart. the old Ravenloft is up there too. If I dig I might have the second printing....... mmmmm I know what I'm doing tonight.

The best one was a home grown adventure where my paladin died holding the pass so the rest of the group could make it out...

I'll second this. It spawned an entire story arc far beyond just the module. And the module itself was pretty awesome by itself.

Hey guys! The challenge question was to name only one as your all time favorite. Glad to see I am not the only one who can't narrow it down to just one.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Well, there is a slight problem in the question. Does it mean: best of all D&D (and its derivatives), or best for a campaign setting? If the latter, then I'm cool with T1-4, I6, and I'd have to really think of something for the other settings.

Over all, useable in D&D is what I meant. Not specific setting.

I really liked DL1, but that is more out of nostalgia than anything. It was finally years before I managed to get 1st printings of all the DL modules. I know its not a big feat, but I'm happy!

Only one? This question regularly returns on most boards and it's always difficult to answer.

I've found that my single favorite module of all times doesn't exist. My favorites have changed over the years that I've played this game, which means that I can only say what my current favorite is.

Past favorites (that can become future favorites again) were: The ToEE, KotB, Thieves of Fortress Badabaskor, The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan and Against the Giants.

My current favorite is Dark Tower.

Ha! I found my way back to these forums.
Against the Giants. I ran a cleric and a ranger through this campaign with a club up on Whidbey Island. I had played before, but these guys were awesome gamers. Since then, I have DM'd it several times.
The Tomb of Horrors.
The Temple of Elemental Evil. I'm currently running this one placed in The Wilderlands.
The forge of fury. We had a LOT of fun with this.

There are also some good Lejendary Adventures out there, but I guess they don't count. I'll have to start another thread.

I think my favorite is Caverns of Thracia, although lots of those mentioned on these boards would be near the top.
