Just got C&C
Just got C&C
I just wanted to say hello. I got both of the main books, after reading reviews at rpg net, and love them. Needless to say, this solves my issues of quickly running games and prepping for them.
Yeah, everytime I want to run a 3.5 game now, I salivate, until I remember what running one is like. Have not run a real game in a year. I tried out C&C a bit, and was very happy. It is definitely a different game than 3e, and certainly reminds me of my 1eADND days.

Yes, definitely stay active on the boards, and we are all happy to offer help and suggestions. Welcome to the Crusade!
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Thanks! I've been lurking here for about two months, going through the posts and learning about the game before I bought it. The game I am trying to get started will hopefully start soon (see my sig), and I will report anything interesting that crops up, and possibly a summary of the game events in the other forum.

Welcome all to the Crusade!
Let us know if we can help answer questions or just give ideas; or be a receptive audience for your ideas. We can't say we'll always agree, but we're a pretty tolerant and receptive bunch around here. Kind of have to when House Ruling is virtually condoned by the game!
...just like long ago editions of other games! Ah, the memories!

Thanks again. I have gathered six players now for my PbP Temple of Elemental Evil game. Some of them have never played C&C and do not own the rules. Maybe they will pick them up, which would be nice!

DOH!
I found out about this after you filled your roster!!
Ah well... Hope you have a good time running ToEE. I'm actually retro-fitting it for my own campaign right now.
Good luck!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Funny story... I just got home from my weekly D&D game, and I've been telling the group about C&C and how much I'm looking forward to playing it (as soon as we finish Expedition to Castle Ravenloft we are going to try it out). During the game, we took several breaks to figure out if certain skills had synergy with others, if certain actions prompted attacks of opportunity, etc... it seemed like a comedy of errors. Everytime something like this came up, I told them how simple it would be in C&C. I think I have them pretty anxious to get started. I gave them the option of trying it out for a couple of sessions and if they really like it then I'm going to help them recreate their 7th level characters in C&C the best I can so they can keep playing them.
Here are a couple of my house rules that may help make it easier for 3E players to get into C&C:
Something I call "Feat like Actions".
In reality this is when you want to attempt something the base rules don't cover. Such as many feats seen in the 3E D&D rules set.
Typically you declare you want to attempt to perform an "extra" kind of action. Such as attempt an extra normal attack, or your opponent goes down and you want to try and attack the target to your left the same round (called a Cleave in 3E). Then I tell you the TN, which is typically the HD of the creature against whom you are attacking. You roll the d20 and try to beat the TN, adjusting with your class level only. No magic bonuses or stat bonuses help you. Pure class level only.
If you succeed, you get to make an extra attack roll, if you fail your turn is over.
Sometimes you might convince me to allow you more than one such roll in a given round. Give me good reasoning that I can agree with, and I am likely to say yes.
Typicaly, if you pull off an extra attack roll, and that attack takes down your opponent I will likely let you attempt the cleave like action against the next enemy, if its HD are the same as or lower than the opponent you just defeated.
Remember, you roll to see if you can even make the attempt. If that roll succeeds, then you get to roll again to see if you actually pull it off.
Yes, I intentionally make it require so much extra rolling. This is to discourage players from using it ALL the time. I want to see it used in tough fights. Fights where you need that something "extra" to go your way to win the day. If your worried about you and the party surviving the fight, start requesting such rolls.
If the fight seems to be going your way, don't request the rolls, it slows things down for no good reason other than "just because".
Skills:
If it makes sense for your character to have such a skill, and you write up a character background giving details as to why they have it, then your character has the skill.
Perhaps the best way for you to know what skills you have is to use the 3E skills lists. Look at the class that most closely matches your characters class (very easy in most cases). Whatever is listed for that class you have as a skill. The only limits I care about is in Knowledge, Craft, and Profession. You can have a skill in each of these categories. Just one. You can have an additional skill in each of these categories for each bonus you have to your INT.
It only works this way at character creation. In play you can spend down time learning skills instead of increasing stats, with very similiar rules.
/end
Notice that I have chosen to simplify some things by removing limitations. Like feats, I don't really follow any of the 3E limitations. The only one I kind of follow is if a wizard wants to do someting that is more a fighter thing to do, or vice versa. For that I raise the TN from 12 to 18.
Also before thinking this may be too powerful, remember that most of the time only one feat can be used in a single round of combat. Something along the lines of Cleave and whirlwind attack are probable exceptions.
Now for a feat that is part of a "feat chain" you may want to keep the level requirements (BtH) for those to keep it as a progression.
Anyways, just suggestions if your group misses feats or skills a little too much.
