My Book of Familiars arrived today!

Post by Treebore »

This is a thick book! I like the Character folios and sheets they sent to. I think I was supposed to get pencils, but didn't.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I live in "no where Arizona" and usually have to wait up to a week after others get it, so I feel your pain, just not this time!

It's a cool book, beyond even the Castles & Crusades game. A book like this has never seen the light of day in RPGs as far as I know. It's quite good, but does contain a plethora of 3Eisms (which doesn't necessarily make it an error, just the evolution of the C&C game).

Definitely could, but I haven't been able to read any because my daughter stole the book from me. So I am going mostly by what I remember from the D20 version, which had even less than this book, by a lot.

It "could" yes, but it all depends upon how you allow the features into your game. I play with advantages, so not a problem, they can take an advantage slot. But even then, there is some amount of power creep with this book. Most of the animal options in here do have potential to increase the power level maybe a bit more than a traditional advantage.

I allow advantages at 1st (must be a heritage advantage), 2nd, 4th...and every 4 levels thereafter. So if you elect to use one on a familiar or animal companion advantage, well...you only have so many advantages.

They also list XP costs if your not using advantages, but these do not seem "steep enough" to me. In fact, I might even go so far as to use both an advantage AND associated XP cost.

Power creep is ok if you just add more monsters to kill the PCs with. I mean for the PCs to kill. :D
This book has seemed neato from the first time I heard of it.

The non-animal familiars fascinate me.

Treebore, I recall something about pencils and tee-shirts but it's been so long back I can't recall what we were supposed to receive if we pre-ordered the book for $49.

I got the folios and sheets as well but I think we are missing additional stuff.

Does anyone recall? Calling all Troll Lords! Please let us know!

Hurray, mine arrived today. Book of Familiars looks great. However, not having yet gotten my hands on the character folios previously, I'm really impressed with them. It's a great way of chronicling the events of a campaign, as well as saving wear and tear on the character sheet itself.

As far as power creep goes, it does tend to push upward the abilities for each character. However, the XP cost (or use of advantage) may help to balance the increase provided by the familiar. Also, familiars can be smashed. Granted it would probably upset a player to have that nice critter killed in the line of duty, but it's a possibility with someone overplaying their familiar's use.

To bring back an older thread, has anyone received the premiums for pre-ordering the book?

As was mentioned previously in this thread, some of us recall that there should have been pencils and a tee-shirt as part of the extra money pre-order.

Anyone?

Are we not recalling correctly?
