Zudrak's Greyhawk Campaign

Post by Zudrak »

I have wanted to write a campaign journal of sorts for too long now, so I'll just dive into it and clean it up later as I have time...

Dramatis Personae:
Durek Lockerhelm, Mountain Dwarven cleric of Clangeddin from the Abbor Alz mountains
(played by my brother-in-law)
Laurelin Morwen, Lightfoot Halfling thief from Botkinburg in the Principality of Ulek
(played by my sister)
Scashblah, Gray Elven magic-user from unknown whereabouts
(played by my other brother-in-law)
Alkyir Kleaork, Human fighter from Loftwick in the Yeomanry
(played by my eldest son)

We began this campaign in August 2013, reassembling most of the gaming group that gathered from 2007-2010, and have since played in September, February, and yesterday (3/29).

I have shoe-horned the A series of modules -- at least A0 - A4 -- into the World of Greyhawk Fantasy Setting (TSR, 1983). The Hruesen River is the Jewel River in Greyhawk, east of the Principality of Ulek and west of the Pomarj, with the same "bend" in the river accounting for the locations of Botkinburg, the Blacktooth Ridge and Fromkin's Pass. The scale has been shrunken from what is presented in the A series of modules to better accommodate it into the World of Greyhawk setting. For instance, the Botkinburg map on the inside cover of A1 has had its scale halved from 25 miles to 12.5 miles. It makes the locales closer, but with the accounting for things like Thunderstrike being set to the west of Ludensheim, the Azure Sea now not far south of Malforten, the removal of El Marsh Lake for the aforementioned Azure Sea, etc. there is plenty of opportunity for adventure, intrigue, and derring-do for the party. The Pomarj situation of 576 CY is perfect for the borderlands that lie between it and the Ulek Principality.

The party originally met in Thunderstrike and responded to a call for heroes to end the depredations of one vicious gnoll leader, Gritznak, and his band of humanoids. Upon arriving in Malforten after taking a river boat to the town of Hrueset and heading east on foot, the party met with the community's representatives: Eryl the Hoskin, Amanda Rhyan, Blodwyn Lycharn, and Griffry the Hat. They stayed overnight outside near The Shrine of Nathair Sgiathach, god of the fey, so as to keep a watch over the hamlet of Malforten. They foiled the nighttime plans of a pair of thieves who attempted to rob the house of Ifon Picton, for which Ifon is most grateful. One thief was cut down and the other surrendered and was thus turned over to the community elders and imprisoned. (He will eventually be transported to Hrueset and perhaps beyond to face his punishment.)

The heroes then fended off an attack upon Malforten by goblins riding on wolves. Laurelin used a pouch of dog pepper to irritate the wolves, which confused the humanoid raid on the hamlet. The wolves were struck down and the goblins defeated before they could escape. With some information gleaned from the goblins, the party discovered an approximate location of the temple, Baleon Nakt. After conferring with the leaders once more, they headed out for the temple the next morning...
