My Cordex Nordica arrived...

Post by Treebore »

today. I've only flipped through it, but it looks really nice.

FYI, only the first 150 to back the Kickstarter get this, so if your not one of the first 150, you cannot get this. This is the soft cover "special" they e-mailed their e-mail subscribers about, as an "Early Bird" reward. So if you want to be in on such deals in the future, sign up for their news letter.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

OK, just the history and monster sections have made me very glad I bought this. Now on to the rest of it.

You know, with the setting of Airhde having the lands of the Norse Gods just to the North and West of Airhde proper, this book has a lot of great material to use in Airhde.

Be warned, this product is far from error free as well. So those of you who hate mis-spellings and awkward wording, and missing words are going to be driven nuts by this product, assuming this was printed from the final draft.

While the mis spellings and frequent absence of the word "be" will be irritating to some, the material is pretty darn awesome! The write up of the gods is the most thorough and flavorful I have seen in a RPG product! There are write ups for Norse deities I had forgotten existed in the Mythologies. Then again its been about 25 years since I read what was available on the Norse Mythologies, so I may have forgotten, or the materials weren't as thorough as claimed at the time.

The historical notes given on our real world locations, while brief, is interesting, and obviously aimed at giving game hooks, whether you use an alternate Earth as your setting, or rename countries to fit areas in any given setting, etc...

The "monsters" section is really good too with all the little Nordic Myth touches they are given, and I like how the author tries to stick with the M&T versions of monster as a base line, even saying use the Red Dragon or Hill Giant entries as your baseline, but add or change the following...

At this point I have only spot read the sections on the magic and alternate classes, but what I have read seems to be great for really bringing a unique feel of the "Nords" to a campaign setting, so am really looking forward to reading those sections in detail.

So bottom line is, this book is pretty awesome, as far as I am concerned. Despite its errors, and I am pretty sure I have come across over 20 of those so far, the content we are given more than makes up for it. Plus the artwork is pretty darn good, even though some of it came up very dark, especially the one on page 6 or there abouts, its so dark I have trouble making out what is even going on in the picture. So I hope it will be much better in the HC. So to use a rating system used by the only podcast I listen to, I'll give this product a rating of 4 Dragons so far. Which is out of 5 possible, so is pretty good. It fails to get a 5 simply because of the numerous errors and the overly dark artwork. Put that aside, and this is a pretty awesome book!

You still misunderstand, this isn't a PDF, its a soft cover printing, the PDF isn't available yet, that happens next week, when they start shipping the HC's to us.

Sorry guys for the booboos and errors, I was hoping it was caught in the safety net of editing. One of my writing ticks is forgetting to put 'be' at times in my writing as I go and I have never figured out why. These errors DO need to be addressed swiftly however so that the Codex Nordica can be best volume yet!

Its not your fault, you had two editors who should have caught these. I am hopeful that they didn't use the same final version to do this print run AND for the HC. I hope the one the HC has is different, and far better edited.

Every author can and should do his or her best, but it's VERY difficult to proof your own writing. Because you know what it's supposed to say, your brain has a way of filling things in so that it looks right to you ... What's why professional publishers have editors and copy editors, on whom the primary responsibility lies.

tl;dr: No worries, mate. :)

Because I wasn't on the email list at the time, I didn't know about the secret offer. So I pledged after the kickstarter was opened to the unwashed masses. But apparently I was still in the first 150 to pledge because guess what was in my mailbox this morning! :D

Can't wait to start reading it!

First 150? Are you certain, I seem to recall it was open to all of those who pledged $49 or more during the 'soft launch'. I do not recall a 150 limit and looking at the Newsletter sent out for the soft launch it doesn't mention it either. That said, I don't know how many people had backed by the time this window ended so if it was under 150 people and the Trolls decided to extend it to the first 150 that qualified, then kudos to them!

They have just earned more 'Awesome Points' (TM)

;)

I recall it as being for everyone within the pre-kickstarter kickstarter phase as well. Regardless, mine arrived yesterday and today I actually had time to look at it. Looks great as far as written content, art, and new angles to incorporate into existing worlds. I really like the Futhark included as alternate/extra runes for the rune mark class.
