Looking for ideas on making 0-level characters work

I love Warhammer's tradition of starting out with a complete nobody (rat catcher, barkeep, etc) and advancing to fully fledged adventurer. C&C assumes you begin at 1st level as an adventurer (as most games do). I'm looking for ideas on how to make the WH style work for C&C. In other words, you start out as a 0-level rat catcher or blacksmith or barkeep and have a handful of unintended adventures, then graduate to a 1st level adventurer. I would like to make it 'organic', meaning that you become the adventuring class that seems appropriate to the stuff you experienced in your 0-level adventures. So the barkeep who finds a scroll and manages to cast a spell from it becomes a wizard, and the blacksmith who builds shelters becomes a ranger, etc.

Ideas?

Do a search of the forum. Someone had a system posted a good long while ago for zero level PCs. I don't recall who it was or what they had done, but I know it was around.

Not exactly sure this is what you are looking for, but these are my rules for 0-level characters. It's not like WH, but it works for C&C.
