Is there a new Monster book out there?

Post by Treebore »

That has truly original stuff in it, that doesn't go over board in order to be different?

I ask because I think I have every book possible at this point for D&D games, to where I am reluctant to checking out the new stuff being put out by people, small or large. Between all the pre 3E monster books, all the 3E monster books I own, and the Tome of Horrors Complete, Complete Monstrosities, and all the Pathfinder monsters, I really doubt anyone can create a monster, let alone a whole book of them, that I would feel is new and cool enough to want.

So do any of you know of a product that can still surprise and delight me with new, usable, monsters?
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

You've seen one, you've seem them all. A few you may like, no promises:

There's James Edward Raggi IV's Random Esoteric Creature Generator; you can make a bunch of your own, but I suppose you could do that anyway. Also "A Magical Society's" Beast Builder.

Geoffrey McKinney's Isle of the Unknown. Not a monster manual as such, but packed with monsters (100+), statted simply, and colorfully illustrated. They are truly fantastic and many of them are pretty creepy (though they tend to be of the the strange chimera variety, horribly pieced together animals with a strange twist.)

Teratic Tome from Neoplastic Press wasn't too bad. It's mostly along the lines of very evil, graphic, cruel grotesque aberrations.

There is Chaosium's "All the World's Monsters" all on RPGNow. They are old school indeed, but lots of stuff there.

Failing that, stat up everything you see in a Bosch tryptych, or page through the Codex Seraphianus for ideas.

I already have Raggi's RECG as well as XRP's whole Magical Society series. I don't have Isle of the Unknown, but Teratic Tome was precisely the product I was thinking of when I mentioned going overboard to be different.

Statting up everything in Bosch tryptych is simply too much work. I'd never seen Codex Seraphianus before.

I like the ADD Bestiary. It's not much different than any other monster book, but it does have a few different takes on things and has around 900 monsters, most of which have an illustration.

For sure. I bought my wife a 3' x 5' copy of The Garden of Earthly Delights at the Prado. I framed it for her office. Some really neat possibilities there.

Teratic Tome get's big play at my C&C tables.

The author, Raphael Chandler is devious, twisted, and just really good at coming up with truly hellish monstrosities. Not always for the squmish, but these monsters are not pure shock value critters either. Lots of good stuff. Highest recommendation.

Here's another. It's the Lusus Naturae
Unfortunately the Kickstarter just ended for Rafael's new critter book right here.

I'm looking forward to this one too, just because of how good the Teratic Tome was. It will be out to the general public soon enough.

Yes, I was just getting ready to suggest this one. Lusus Naturae looks interesting...weird, but interesting. Definitely up your alley if you're looking for "something different."

As mentioned Teratic Tome very good. I own a ton of Monster Manuals and you always find some gems in there. Tome of Horror IV is pretty good. Its for S&W and Pathfinder.

I will echo the others in the chorus by mentioning the Teratic Tome - one of my favorite recent monster books.

I liked it so much I wrote a review, which you can read here: Teratic Tome: Depraved, Grotesque, Brilliant

I backed the Lusus Naturae KS, but haven't received the goods yet. When I do, I will probably write a review of it as well.
