SALE: Gygax Fantasy Worlds Books & Upper Works

Post by moriarty777 »

Ok folks, I'll be honest that I was on the fence with these items and I thought I'd post them here as we have some fans on these forums that would really appreciate what I'm offering.

I have all seven volumes of the Gygax Fantasy Worlds Books which are as follows:

The Canting Crew
World Builder
Living Fantasy
Nation Builder
Insidiae
Extraordinary Book of Names
Cosmos Builder

I will sell the lot of these books for $125 + Shipping and I will not break up the lot. Unlike the other sales, these I am asking a bit more for these but remember that these are out of print and likely will never see print again. Besides, fans of the books (like myself) will tend to ascribe a higher value to them than not but given the cost of the books originally (MSRP), I like to think you are still getting a decent price without the hassle of trying to track some of these books down (some are harder than others).

Likewise, after much thought, I have decided to offer my open copy of the Upper Works. By unfortunate circumstances, this is a rare item and needs no introduction. I've seen some of the ridiculous prices asked for it and I've heard what some people have paid for it. But, like the GFW books, this will not be on the cheap side either. I am asking for $140 + Shipping.

If a buyer wants to buy both the GFW books and the Upper Works, I can negotiate a bit on the price.

If interested in either, please contact me via PM. Terms will be similar to those posted in my FUNDING THE FUN sale thread which can be found here:

Just some friendly advice...

If you have the GFW slipsleeve case, you're underselling.

If the Upper Works is in the shrink, which not all are, you're very underselling.

Thanks Serl...

No slipcase... and Upper Works is not in shrink.

Am I still underselling because I realize I might be but as long as I'm not underselling by too much if I am.

Still need several of the GFW books, and that's a fair price. As for the CZ:UW, I don't know what the actual finishing bid prices are for a copy. Haven't looked in some time. I did see an open copy (signed by Jeffrey Talanian) go for 241 dollars at the auction at North Texas Rpg Con. Always wished there had been a pdf of that and Yggsburgh, for preservation's sake. :(

I agree on the PDF sentiment to be sure. As for the GFW books, I hoped I was being reasonable but these are books I wouldn't mind keeping on the bookshelf either. World Builder and Living Fantasy are great books and I have used the Book of Extraordinary Names on more than one occasion. Insidiae looks neat but never really delved into Cosmos Builder or Nation Builder. The Canting Crew is interesting but ironically my least favorite -- I had been looking forward to the C&C revamp of the book which got cut short by, well, what happened with the License with all things concerning Gygax.

Sad really. As for these books, I don't hold as much value as I do the Castle Zagyg Vol.I book and the signed Gazetteer I have for it. If a fellow gamer can appreciate them, I will be content in parting with them.

I have used Book of Names on occasion, and would be using the others for reading primarily. Those were actually available on pdf, but I never got the electronic versions unfortunately. The town districts for Yggsburgh were on pdf also.I do have those. I know that Yggsburgh and Upper Works weren't, and I'm not sure about the Outs Inn. Seems like I remember Troll saying Gary wasn't overly fond of pdf's. On the topic of GFW revamps...well, we all know that story. It's been 5 and a half years (?) since Gary's products were pulled from the marketplace, and still nothing. To quote another person, I think somebody saw dollar signs that weren't there. Hence, Gary's products are dead in the water. :(

Mixed feelings. One hand says "congrats!" and the other says "sorry you felt the need to sell" and then its countered by "someone will get them and they'll appreciate it."

Anyway... had I not had them in duplicate, I'd have been glad to have ponied the horse.

Mixed feelings indeed.

They are wonderful books and the boxed set was fantastic. The decision to sell them didn't come lightly either. Tonight, I'll be boxing them to ship and before I do, I'll do a final page flip through some of the material. But yes, the buyer I found was really appreciative and I have a feeling he will cherish these items.

I'm not sure if I really needed to sell them but, these funds like other funds I have been receiving as I have been clearing my gaming shelves are making a difference. They are in part financing my trip to GenCon this year too so at least there is something positive coming out of this too. However, a lot of stuff that I am parting with is also resulting from the realization that, for all the enjoyment and 'coolness' of many of these things, I won't or likely won't be using it.

And... anything that I miss, well, maybe I should turn around and do a bit more 'creating' and 'writing' to suit my own needs and games.

;)

I definitely get you. It just always saddens me to think someone might need to sell their beloved RPGs. Maybe its because I hold mine closely... I don't know. No problem with stores and the like, but individuals who get into whatever situation and have to part ways with it... guess its because I've been there (once had to sell off my entire Shadowrun collection for example) and it sucked beyond suck.

World Builder is an amazing book. I'm not sure I could ever part with mine...
