When Was the Winter Dark?
When Was the Winter Dark?
In terms of 30-40 years ago. I got the impression it was a 1000 years ago but after I read the After Winters Dark PDF I get the impression it is a lot more recent. Any help would be great thanks:).

I believe it was 100 years ago. It was 1000 years long.

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
According to the timeline the Winter's Dark ended 67 years before the campaign would begin.

I think it's different between the Codex of Erde and the AWD folio. Hopefully the Codex of Aihrde will be consistent and the final word on the matter.

Julian is likely correct; when I use the setting, it has not happened yet, so it would be in the future.

I'm not near them right now but I will double check both AWD and the Codex.

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
In all three books (AWD, AWD Folio and the Codex of Erde) the end of the Winter Dark is set as the year 1130MD, the year Unklar is banished from the plane.
The last year of recorded events is 1197MD, which is 67 years after the Unklar is gone.
But, defining when the Winter Dark was, is a little more complicated.
Unklar is summoned to the plane 748 by the Old Year Calendar, on the year 800 OY/1MD he is crowned God Emperor and rules the World and the Winter Dark declared. A new calender is started. But the Paths of Umbra, who designed the new calendar hedge their bets a little because the Shroud of Darkness is not created until the year 250MD and that is the moment the world begins to suffer the Long Centuries, a winter centuries long.
Unklar reigns as God Emperor for 1130 years (but in Aenoch for 1182 years as he seizes the throne of that Empire in 748OY/-52MD) and in that year (1130MD or 1930OY) is banished. His servants continue the fight for another six years, being defeated in 1036/1136MD.
But when does the Winter Dark end? Technically it ended before Unklar's banishment. In the year 1124MD the Shroud of Darkness begins to unravel and continues to do so, and by 1128MD its pretty much gone, but for that hanging over Aufstrag and the surrounding lands.
Each of the Young Kingdoms has their own marker for when it ended. For instance the Empress is not crowned in New Aenoch until 1040MD and they call that the beginning of the new world.
All that said, it is generally held that the Winter Dark ended with Unklar's banishment.
That should be about as clear as mud. So here in brief.
748 Unklar Summoned, Made Emperor of Aenoch
800/1 Unklar crowned God Emperor
1050/250 The Shroud of Darkness (this OY date is mislabeled in the Codex of Erde), Long Centuries Begin
1919/1119 Winter Dark Wars Begin
1924/1124 The Shroud of Darkness Begins to Unravel
1928/1128 The Shroud of Darkness in tatters
1930/1130 Unklar Banished
1936/1136 Coburg defeated in the Battle of the Tree
1919/1119 - 1997/1197: Birth of the Young Kingdoms
Hope that helps!

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
In Codex of Erde you have the current year as 1097md. In AWD you have it as 1197dy. Are Dark Years different than MD?
But you have Pryzmira born the same date in both calendars: 1010. So she'd be 87 in Erde and 187 in AWD.
(note: I am not arguing that I know more about Aihrde/Erde than Stephen! I just still don't get it. I asked this question years ago and didn't understand the answer then either.)

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
I use 1130MD as the end point of the Winter's Dark due to this being when Unklar was banished. My reasoning has to do with the following passage in the Codex:
To me, this places the end of the Millennial Dark and the beginning of a new age at 1130MD. For my campaign, several of the Young Kingdoms did away with Unklar's calender and have made 1130MD the first year of the new age. To honor the past they also used AWD (After Winter's Dark) as their own version of our A.D. So you have my campaign being in AWD 67 opposed to 1197MD.And so ended the Age of Winter Dark and began the New Age and the world a new peace of sorts. The folk of Demeter, knowing full well the the victory won in Aufstrag , proclaimed the seven days of battle fought between the council and Unklar a holy time, so that those days were celebrated ever after as the Feast of Unmaking ---Codex of Erde pg. 48

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
MD and YD are the DY are the same. One stands for Millennial dark, the other for Dark years.Aergraith wrote:In Codex of Erde you have the current year as 1097md. In AWD you have it as 1197dy. Are Dark Years different than MD?

But your right from the AWD...the blue book, from 2000. I had forgotten all about that. When doing the Codex of Aihrde I discovered the time line got gilted around the 1000MD, it was off 100 years. I can't remember now what/why that happened, but a whole swath of history got washed out. But the Codex of Erde has the correct date...though I found one off in there. The 250MD should be 1050OY, its listed as 1175OY.
But holy shit! I just noticed...and you may have years ago...that all the dates in the HISTORY of the Winter Dark Wars are off by 100 years (Codex of Erde page35-49. I think that carried over to the new books as well. I'll have to double check! Thanks!
Prymira should have been born in 1110, making her 87. They were wrong in Erde, but fixed in the new edition...BUT I'll double check.

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
Nice! I run the MD calendar as the standard, unless your a dwarf, they use there own. Some humans, especially in Kayomar have begun to revert to the OY as befits their people. Everyone else was like "we already have all this stationary! Lets just leave it MD!"Julian Grimm wrote:I use 1130MD as the end point of the Winter's Dark due to this being when Unklar was banished. I thought about reverting to OY but, I felt Unklar's Banishment was a significant enough event that would have people calling for a new system. I could see them wanting to shake of as much of the Winter Imperium (What I call Unklar's empire) as they can and the calendar would be a good place.

Re: When Was the Winter Dark?
Thanks for the help everyone, I only have the AWD PDF and it was a little confusing and I do not really have a good map of the world either as the $1 only really shows continents and I have no idea what the Empire looks like. They visited Ascalon last night and I kind of modelled it on Carthage.
