I just found out about castles yesterday and I cant wait to get my hands on it. I have a question though. One of the main reasons I started disliking d&d was because of its emphasis on killing for xp. Does this game do a good job of handing xp to players who dident kill as many creatures or dosent fight as often?

Well, technically you get it in this game for treasures you steal, etc...

However, C&C is about doing things your way, so if you want the xp's to be awarded for role play, achieving story goals, and other non-combat reasons you are encouraged to run your game that way.

There are people on the boards who have seriously altered C&C to suit their tastes (Metathiax comes first to my mind).

So change what you don't like to something you do like and you are not only still playing C&C, but doing it in the spirit in which it is meant to be played in.

Check out various house rules on www.cncplayer.net
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

There's still XP given out for defeating (not necessarily killing though) critters. There are also specific guidelines on how to award XP but the CK is free to tweak those as he sees fit. For example, my players generally get about 1/4 their XP from combat while the remaining 3/4 comes from story, roleplaying, ideas and participation awards. I do not award XP for gaining treasure since, in my mind, it's a reward enough in itself.

I hope that helps!

Xp on the monsters is fairly low by the book, meaning you have plenty of space for other rewards, including story, achieving goals, clever defeat of an opponent, getting treasure or whatever it is that you want to reward them for.

If you are bothered with how fast combat alone can make your character level up in 3.X then this won't be an issue with C&C, just like it was not an issue in other editions of D&D.

I might add that, by the book, XP is given out for story, monsters, money, magic items and roleplaying. It all depends on how fast the CK(DM) wants his players to level-up. I, for one, like a 2-4 game sessions (each 5-6 hours long) per level rhythm at low levels (for single-class characters below 4th level).

If playing by the book... and especially if you're using published modules, you'll find that most of the XP will potentially come from the loot (be it items or treasure).

The notion (as alluded to earlier in this thread) is that 'the prize' is what one might be seeking. I doubt any adventurer would really want to go killing monsters just for the hell of it. If the objectives can be completed without putting one's self into harms way, then all the better.

However, if you choose to minimize XP for money or items, then you should increase those for story and quest completion to balance things out.

There is always an alternative to whacking critters in the game. This being awarding XP for avoiding a combat encounter. Give the players just as much xp for avoiding a fight as they do for combat. The enemy is still considered defeated.

Thanks for the suggestions. So far, it sounds like I made a good choice by getting into this game.

What Metathiax forgot to mention is if you want to see how much he as altered/house ruled C&C the download is in the sig area of his posts. ITs version 8.691378439645928 or somewhere in that neighborhood.

Any publicity is good publicity!
I've made very few changes since v6 though. Just minor tweaks and corrections resulting from playtesting.

Man. give out a level a dungeon if you feel they earned it. Levels don't really matter. Play the adventure, whatever level the dungeon. If they don't have a character high enough level, let 'em roll one up.

Variety is the spice of life...a little low level, mid level, high level ...alternate to keep it fresh.

I agree hacking away at a ton of monsters can be fun every once in a while, but a good game takes alot of "playing"
