Black Box classes in action?
I've read through the majority of the black box classes. Some of them are cool. Some...well, I simply don't know. Now that the products been out for a little while (granted, a very little while), I was wondering if anyone has any table experience with these classes. If so, how have they fared?

Its going to be a while yet before I start any new campaigns in which to allow them as an option.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I read through it when it was released. I think that most of those classes need more development time and cooking. When the real Adventurer's Backpack book comes out I will check them out again but I wouldn't use them personally or allow them as a DM at this time.Lord Dynel wrote:I've read through the majority of the black box classes. I read through the Adventurer’s Backpack pamphlet in the C&C Black Box release. I looked at is a preview and not as a final product. There were some interesting game mechanics provided for some of the character classes, but in no way did I look at Adventurer’s Backpack pamphlet as a finished product including the clauses provided. At this time I would not recommend using them

Looking at them, I assumed that they were mostly intended to be NPC classes, for CKs to create memorable henchmen, since they all seem to be somewhat overclocked versions of the core classes.

They seemed all over the place. The Thief seemed like an "Essentials" or "Basic" version of the Rogue with less attributes used over the traditional class. Kind of an easy mode maybe.Pat Payne wrote:Looking at them, I assumed that they were mostly intended to be NPC classes, for CKs to create memorable henchmen, since they all seem to be somewhat overclocked versions of the core classes.

I did not get that same impression. I could see how that opinion could be formed, though. They are kind of reminiscent of those old Dragon NPC classes. But I saw them more as viable options, albeit variants to core classes (archer to fighter, thief to rogue, etc.) more than CK tools for NPC options. But that's my opinion. I haven't used any yet, mainly because my players have their characters set. Although with a new campaign brewing, I might open these up as options. I was just wondering if anyone had used them yet. I'm playing in a game my wife runs for me and my two boys but I play the cleric and our little crew would be quite doomed if I switched to an archer.Pat Payne wrote:Looking at them, I assumed that they were mostly intended to be NPC classes, for CKs to create memorable henchmen, since they all seem to be somewhat overclocked versions of the core classes.

Ranger-Cleric or Archer-Cleric is always a great multi-class especially of a God of Archery such as in the elven pantheon from the Dragon or Uller from the Norse Pantheon.. you get you have your cake and eat it too!
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.

Absolutely! A "holy order" of elven archers would be quite sweet!Captain_K wrote:Ranger-Cleric or Archer-Cleric is always a great multi-class especially of a God of Archery such as in the elven pantheon from the Dragon or Uller from the Norse Pantheon.. you get you have your cake and eat it too!

I do not yet have a black box. I need to get one.
I figure, like all C&C, I will modify things. Not because its wrong or doesn't work, but mostly because I like to add my own crap.

Yeah, I want to get one too. Collector in me, and hopefully this is an idea generator as well.
