One thing that came out of this exercise is quite a few small errors and inconsistencies that I'd like to clear up. I've been using the very recently updated PDF version, and still found the following things present:
* page 3 - mentions maps on page 50-51. The pdf only has 48 pages (maps are actually on page 28-29)
* Random Encounters - there are random encounters for Bandits and Hyenas - neither of these are in any monster manual I own. I've assume Bandits are just 1 HD humans, but Hyenas ?
* Vargolg barracks, area 7 - the description mentions a dozen goblins, but the stat blocks mention 8 goblins.
* Vargolg Workroom, area 13 - description mentions three gnolls, stat blocks list 2 gnolls.
* Vargolg Workroom, area 13 - Treasure lists "small gold mouthpiece to a musical instrument (powerful magic emanates from this, see Appendix C New Magic Items p. 174)." - No C&C book I own has this page reference in it, which means I have no idea what this is!
* The Ghost Naga - says "see appendix for stats" - there is no appendix in the new version. Ghost Nagas are now in the Monster and Treasure guide, so presume this is omitted deliberately, but the text still refers to the removed appendix
Beyond this, the Troll stats differ quite a bit from the Monsters and Treasure guide. Not a problem, but the 1d4+4 damage the troll in this book does (instead of 1d4) makes it MUCH worse than a regular troll to a low level party.
Really, it's the magic item that perplexes me the most - the rest I can workaround, although given I'm trying to write a 100% faithful conversion for others to use, I'd rather not be putting any of my own assumptions in just to patch the gaps, as other CKs might take a different assumption. E.g. I've made Hyenas the same as Coyotes, but I'd rather actually know the official Troll Lords stats for a Hyena!
As this is one of the most played C&C adventures by new groups, from my perspective, I feel a fully polished adventure with fewer mistakes and ambiguities would help set a good starting base for getting into C&C. I really like the map updates added to later PDF versions - that old map was very scratchy, and the new one much crisper to read / present. Just need to decide how many goblins there are in those barracks etc...
Cheers,
Ben
