I voted 4th. I think it was the most improved printing over the printing before it, in my opinion.

I voted for the 4th print meself. I've used it more than any other C&C book, besides my trusty old 2nd printing, which I gave to a friend a few years ago.

For me it is a tough choice between 4th and 6th. I really like the thick black and white pages of the 4th, but the luxurious color and glossy feel of the 6th calls to me. So I voted 6th, but really it is like 50/50 for those two.

I agree. I love the new printing, don't get me wrong. I think it's a great, polished, beautiful product. I just think that the 4th printing was the best, as far as transitioning from the previous print (with revisions to the barbarian and monk...and illusionists couldn't heal yet.DMSamuel wrote:For me it is a tough choice between 4th and 6th. 1st.
Actually, though, Spartan 300 would be my preferred.

You might want to check that LD. The 4th print was when they got the new spells. Still, it is my favorite printing.Lord Dynel wrote:I agree. I love the new printing, don't get me wrong. 5th printing. Don't like glossy pages at all. Loved the feel of paging through the 5th printing.

As much as I like the content and color of the text and pics in the 6th printing, I completely agree that glossy pages are unpleasant. I didn't like the 3rd printing for the same reason.Omote wrote:5th printing. Don't like glossy pages at all. Loved the feel of paging through the 5th printing.

I have the 2nd Printing Red Leatherette, along with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. I would say 4th gets the most use at my table, but I really do like the bigger print and full color of 6th. But...I'm going with 3rd Printing (Yellow Cover), as it was my first C&C book that I got. At the time it was only the PHB and M&T that was out. Sentimental perhaps, but I do find it my favorite.

I love that 4th print book. Plus, having the same trade dress in the whole set (PHB, M&T, CM, CKG, OG&M, M&ToA) looks nice sitting on my bookshelf. But, if I could have any cover, with any interior, it would be the 1st or 2nd print dressing w/the 4th print materials. There was something about that sand colored book that I liked.Lord Dynel wrote:Yep, it's nice to see the good ol' 4th printing getting some love. Yeah, I agree. The "backlash" to the 4th printing cover color scheme was memorable. But I liked the map-background/sand coloration of the early printing.Rigon wrote:I love that 4th print book. Yes and yes. All kinds of yes. It would be awesome if the did a "throwback" printing with the 6th/4th printings content and the 1st printings covers and in black and white. I'd buy those all day long.Lord Dynel wrote:Yeah, I agree. The "backlash" to the 4th printing cover color scheme was memorable. Re: Please vote for your favorite PHB printing. (aesthetics)
That is kind of hilarious (and I get it). The Trolls really can't win. A vocal number of fans gripe year in and year out about errata needing to be fixed and how the system is broken or sucks to some degree because of it. Some people say they will never buy another of their books unless no errata is found in them after a year or so. But they also have fans who say they wish the Trolls would just reprint an older printing with warts, errata, etc. still in there. The Trolls are screwed. There is no way to make everyone happy. If they gave everyone what they wanted, they'd have people complaining there are too many versions currently in print. It's too confusing, etc. Poor bastards.Rigon wrote:Yes and yes. Hard to know for sure. You make solid points.
However, here were 300+ backers for the kickstarter. Not nearly that many posters on the forums. A lot of quiet backers. New people buying all the time, who do not post here. I suspect the new-comers are younger at heart and that they like color-filled and error-free pages.
Again, I do not know. I do go to GenCon every year and the above is what I see at the booth.

Re: Please vote for your favorite PHB printing. (aesthetics)
Just to be clear, I do own the 6th printing PHB and 4th printing M&T, but they are PDFs. I won't buy them in hardback (though I may pick up the Flipbook since it is in black and white). I have 1st printings of both the PHB and M&T and all of the 4th Crusade books (PHB, M&T, CKG, CM) in hardback, plus the 4th Crusade PHB, M&T, CKG, OG&M, and M&ToA in softback, and a GenCon special edition of the PHB 4th printing in softback with color plates. That's not mentioning I have most of the printings in PDF (I think I'm only missing the 3rd and 5th printings of the PHB). That's a lot for a guy who primarily games online now a days. I have given a 1st printing and 2nd printing PHB away as gifts to my old gaming buddies in an attempt to convert them to C&C, but they both prefer 3.x. I just really like the sand colored covers of the early printings. It gave C&C a distinctive look that I could pick out when it was on a shelf at the game store. The newer cover's (4th-6th) trade dress sort of blends in with all the other RPGs on the shelf.
Plus, as nice as the 6th/4th printings are in color, nothing beats the clean lines of black and white print. Just my 2 cp.
