My favorite RPG pics are the B&W ink drawings from the AD&D 1st Ed PHB & DMG. They will always remind me of those days of wonder & excitement.

I've thought about taking the cover of my 2nd print pdfs, bleaching the color from my 6th & 4th print pdfs, and putting that content with the old covers, then having it print in hardback somewhere to create my ideal C&C books. Just a thought.

Yeah, pretty much why it's only been a thought and not a reality. ;)

You old farts! Black and white grognards! I am taking the cover of my AD&D PHB and putting it over my glossy 6th printing C&C color PHB. Mwahahahahaaaaaaa....

This ends my rant.

While I love the updates and the leather cover on my 6th print, still love the paper and black and white of the 4th print best.

Hey Rigon:

I actually did do something similar. I now have a 5th printing cover with a black & white interior and a 4th printing cover with a coloured interior.

Yip, it was careful surgery, but was surprisingly easy. I'll post pics soon. :)

Awesome, but I was thinking of doing it in a pdf and then having the pdf printed in a hardback. I'll have to look into it at some point, but at this time, it's just a dream.

I prefer the 6th printing, by far.

The 4th print had been my main go to book for the last few years.

I'm just starting to play in a new game and pulled out my 5th print color. Wow, I had forgotten about this release. Fantastic PH . . smells so good, I think I caught a brief high! Some artwork is WAY too dark, but I may have to rethink my fav choice!!

I'd vote for the 5th printing, Player's Lore Edition of the PHB. It's got the classic non-glossy paper, is in full-color printing on white paper (not parchment), and has the best cover in the game (Rune Lore cover). This book epitomizes what a player's handbook should look like. The text is dark brown, and the highlighted sections (examples, equipment lists, spell lists, etc) are with goldenrod coloration (the color of good DMs since the 70s). To see the full-color interior art on white paper really makes the images pop and look even my dynamic. The only problems with this book are the layout mistakes (as this was a last-minute Kickstarter bonus). I handful of letters are covered up in the spell description where the interior pic bleeds over the text, and some of the spells are bolded incorrectly. Otherwise, this is hands down my favorite off all the C&C PHBs in regards to aesthetics.
