They probably wouldn't know why any ways. Just like any "Miracle". You probably never have any idea as to why, only that it happened.
I think that way would work fine for our group. If you need a fair, random way, give one of these power ups anywhere you would have rolled or awarded a new fancy magical weapon that is an upgrade to whatever the party has.

Some parties might need a transparent way of doing these things so everything seems fair and all that, but we all game together enough to not really need that.

Yeah, that's where my mind was heading after suggesting you guys not knowing how many points you had. That would probably just be easiest for me. My only problem is, what would be the "appropriate" time? I don't want to give you guys a too much, too early, but I want them to be useful and meaningful.

If you are going to do it at your end, it may be a bit tough for the CK to track all the various triggers for 8 players. Points gives you an easier "hands off" mechanic. But, in terms of how I envisage it story-wise, it really should be triggered by events/awesome actions at a fairly regular rate ( 1 power/ 2 levels. Something like that. If you haven't done something awesome every other level, look to our old friend Barlieg for some inspiration  ) rather than points.

Well, the appropriate time, when you get down to it, is whenever you decide it is. After all, your free to speed it up or slow it down whenever you feel the need. Coming up with some system will actually lock you in to a set time frame, that ultimately you may find is too fast or too slow. So just do it whenever the hell you want. Its not like we will complain because *gasp* your giving us more cool powers. We only bitch when we think we aren't getting them fast enough, or they get taken away, etc...
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yeah, I can see it now, I am level 2, I am doing something awesome, and BOOP, I feel a power up coming on. Only it's on the haftless bearded axe head stuck in a temple door 1000 miles away.

Which is why, before we leave the temple, I'm going to pry the axe head out of the door ... that and to poke a little fun at the half orc
