D&D Attack Wing

Post by TheMetal1 »

Ok, so I've been looking at these Attack Wing type games since Fantasy Flight Games released X-Wing. My understanding it is based off of an earlier air combat game called Wings of War (or perhaps wings of glory). Key thing is using a template to measure distances, and a card mechanic with dice to resolve conflict. Interestingly, it appears that game was based off of an FFG Silver line game called "Wreckage" (Car combat) similar to Steve Jackson Games "Car Wars".

Then Wizkids with Star Trek Attack Wing (slight variation, but capital ships - which we should see this year for FFG with Star Wars: Armada), and the topic at hand "D&D Attack Wing" both air and ground combat miniatures in the D&D Universe.

As far as space combat type games, I only have Battle Fleet: Gothic. The miniatures are assembled and I have both an Ork & Space Marine Fleet in various stages of repair (and paint), along with a few (3 Each) Imperial and Chaos ships from the core box set (I smashed 1 of each to create an Ork Space Hulk). So I've been pondering getting the Star Wars (tactical), Star Trek (capital) or Armada (capital) versions, but know that it would see about as much use as my BFG. So when I walked in my FLGS and they had D&D Attack Wing, I figured I'd give that a try, as I can always use the Dragons in a C&C or other RPG.

Right out of the box, I really like the minis and the fiddly bits. Though I feel bit limited with the 3 Dragons only. Perhaps they'll do an "army box" at some point. It's about assembled, just sorting through the box and then I'll need to sleeve the cards (yeah I'm one of those guys). Once I give it a try I'll post some more.

Anyone else give this a try?

No. I've looked at it, but have avoided buying into it so far.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

Yep. I've picked up a few packs of minis that I didn't get/didn't get enough of from boosters, but not the core game itself.

I've been pondering this now since I got the game. It looks like the sculpts of the miniatures - especially the mediums - Sun Elfs, Hobgobos, etc. just slide into a base and in fact are the same sculpts for the Icons of the Realm. This seems to include the Tiamat and Bahaumet dragons that are out now with Icons, I think they'll be released as an Attack Wing thing.

What I want to know is, if I get Icons of the Realm, I don't want to re-buy all the same minis just to get the stat cards and bases for Attack Wing.

I do notice you can get extra bases (and different colored bases).

Best case scenario would be you'll be able to buy D&D Attack Wing cards separate, along with the D&D Adventure System Cards and Dungeon Command Cards. Would be a great Print On Demand Option for Wizkids.

As far as I can tell, the sculpts are the same. The bases are different. I can remember the bases for the medium and large creatures from the attack wing blister packs. But the actual mini is the same, coloring and all.

Took a look around and saw, IIRC, over at ENWorld, that there will indeed be a Tiamat and Bahaumet Attack Wing. It's the same sculpt, but with the AW Bases, cards, etc. Probably a bit more expensive too.

It's not Star Trek: Attack Wing.

True, True, True! But it's got Dragons and Mind Flayers. :D

That being said, my only space combat game is Battle Fleet: Gothic. I've been pondering getting Star Wars (Tactical Fighters) or Star Trek (Capital Ships), but now we also have coming on the seen by Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars: Armada (Capital Ships) (and not compatible with Star Trek), one could hope to cross universes... Thoughts on the two (or three) from those who've played the space attack wings.

One other note, perhaps we will see capital ships in D&D Attack Wing. D&D Attack Wing: SpellJammers!

I did a demo game and was not interested. I did buy several of the troop packs when they went on sale for 50% off at my local game store though.

@Daniel,

Lucky score! Haven't gotten any of the big troop packs, will have to see how much I really play. My intent now is to at least get Bahumet when he comes out along with each color dragon (Just need a White Dragon, a Black Dragon - shadow dragon doesn't count for me, and I think a Metalic one - either Bronze/Brass/Copper - I forget which one).
