How does this happen, especially when TLG has complete control and even prints their own books in most cases?

No, size difference doesn't bother me. Editing and typos were a bit troublesome back in the early prints, but they never bothered me too much. And TLG has come a long way with that.
IMO, content is king! If the material is good, I can overlook all the other stuff.

The Trolls don't print these hardcovers, they use someone in Alabama, Louisiana, somewhere along the Gulf Coast.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I purchased mine to play, yes; but they should be symmetrical on the shelf. This picture reminds me how many spelling mistakes and how much errata is contained inside them as well.
That said, I enjoy the game so much that I overlook that. The real content is the old-school approach and rules light goodness within; that is the true value. But yeah, the books should be consistent. I can see why that would bother someone.
I don't think the Trolls have printed there own hardbacks since the CKG. But none the less, that doesn't bother me. I have a crap ton of novel series that have different sizes. As long as I can read them, it doesn't matter to me what size they are.

The Trolls printed their own ckg for awhile. I did get one of those. I prefer the Walsworth book, but the old TLG copy opens very flat at the table. I also have a TLG-printed copy of M&T of A. Not too bad on that one either, but Walsworth wins out. I think there may have been TLG copies of "Of Gods and Monsters". Never had that one. Either way, the Trolls made a fine first effort. Time, money, manpower, and other factors aside, they probably could print their own hc's again someday.
Thinking about it, I think I kind of like the non-uniformity. It gives the books character and individuality. They aren't an encyclopedia set. They are individual books to be used and evaluated individually.

For me, I own so damn many PHB's, they have their own shelf when I bother to put them all on it. Looking at my C&C shelves, I don't group ALL of them together anyways, they are divided by modules and boxed sets, which explains why I never noticed.

Nope. I just throw them on my table router and make 'em the same height.

As long as they fit on my bookshelf, I'm ok with the different sizes. However, there's always The Keep from Geek Chic, though probably overkill for the small differences in TLG book size.
I can understand that being irksome, or at least curious. I bet it's partly from them not all being produced at the same time. I'm willing to bet they're all "within parameters" or whatever teh exact phrase would be.
When we get to the point that book height is all that's left to fix.. well, we'll all be dead and in gamer heaven.
I would suggest a shelf with individual slots, each shimmed so that the top of your books are in perfect alignment... then after that well, you can come to my house and individually clip the blades of grass to perfection..

I think the only way it would really bother me were if the 3 sisters were bought slipcase style and still had the same issue. As it is, I didn't even notice. I think I remember all the module/accessories were the same height, excepting After Winter's Dark.
My wife is OCD, however, and now she's going to stare at the top shelf of my bookshelf with ill-disguised hate.

Well the three sisters are SUPPOSE to be getting a slip case for them.....I forgot about that little tid bit about the different sizes affecting. Now hope they all do fit nicely.....
Yeah, the two of the three sisters that are already out are different sizes, so that slipcase won't be nice and snug. I wonder if the upcoming chubby sister will be different from the other two.
I noticed this too and was kind of like, huh? I didn't get bent out of shape about it but I did notice it. Naturally, I'd prefer uniformity. But given the choice, I'd much rather have them get the darn typos and other stuff really tight before bothering with book height. I don't stare at my books on a shelf, but I do read them quite frequently and the TLG typo ratio is just way too high for my tastes. It doesn't impact my enjoyment of the ruleset but it does make me sad to see printing after printing with errors that just keep getting missed.
