Another Kickstarter I have been considering...

Post by Treebore »

Especially since I've been hearing a lot of comments about either Roll20 or Maptoools dice rollers "cheating", I've been thinking about backing this to see if the results it gives feels more "honest"...

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Do you really think anyone is cheating with these?

Aside from cheating, the Maptool software uses the Java PRNG, which is not truly random but is statistically random enough for D&D.

Roll20 uses real random numbers sampled from external real world sources now, and has a page to check them (though it's just eye candy, you need more analysis than what they show to do that.)

This will probably be big with people in prison.

If I am already online during a game I use this: https://www.random.org/integers/

Truly random numbers. I can even pre-gen as many as needed for a game beforehand.

That's also a good one.

I had no doubt that the Roll 20 and Maptools dice rollers are "honest", or at least close enough. Thats why I used the words I did, such as "feel" and "honest". I am just wondering if the cards would give the perception of actually being random, or end up being seen as "cheating" like a few of the people I have gamed with have taken to claiming about the Roll 20 and Maptools dice rollers.

Unless I saw the mathematic proof for the cards cards, I wouldn't use them. If it was done, they will have presented such on the K.S. page.

Maybe, but I don't think so. Humans are bad at detecting randomness because they are good at finding patterns even where none exist. So someone might do something completely reasonable like roll 3 ones in a row and cry foul, when you need a much greater sample size to determine if there is an issue.

Are you sure they weren't just kidding?

Rgr that, or on the flip side call it good luck and claim that a specific die is lucky and 'always rolls high' because of a string of 18 -20 in a high drama moment. Also forgetting all the <8 rolls before and after that string of high rolls.

Even 'knowing' that, I have 'lucky' attack dice for to hit and damage rolls. Well I did back in the day before I was limited to only on line gaming
