He has been a small, but very important part, of the lives of many of us. We were lucky to have him with us for so long. May his memory live long and prosper.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Sad news, but not totally unexpected. He was very recently hospitalized with advanced copd. Either way, I became aware of Star Trek in the 1970's. My fandom reached a feaver pitch in the 1980's. The McCoy and Spock characters were always my favorites. I was fortunate enough to have met all of the primary cast, except for Kelley, Doohan, and Barret. I attended two or three Nimoy convention panels over the years, and got his autograph in 2004. Nimoy and the rest, are like old friends. What a loss. I think Bones summed it up best (as he often did) in Star Trek II. "He's not really dead, as long as we remember him."

A sad loss. Even sadder with me introducing my girls to the joys of Sci Fi/star trek & Star Wars this winter and remembering how much I loved the shows back when I was their age ...

Sad news. Grew up with Spock. From his Twitter feed five days ago: "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory." Well said.

WOW.

I too feel like a punch in the gut, even though we knew it was coming. Nimoy touched many lives in very positive ways.

I hear you, Traveller. I felt like this when DeForest Kelley and James Doohan died, as well as countless others. They're celebrities, but they were such a huge part of our lives.

It's a little different this time around. While it was painful to lose those two men, they didn't portray a childhood hero. Spock was my childhood hero, and growing up I identified more with him than any other character. In fact, on Facebook I mentioned it was as hard to deal with as losing my brother.

I'll deal with it, in time.

My childhood hero, and he still is my hero, is the Duke. I was devastated when he died. It hit me worse than the death of Elvis' I was 11 and 13 when they died.

There's no doubt that Spock is in a class of his own, but the loss of De Kelley (Bones) for me was equally devastating. In addition to Spock, McCoy is that other character that beats out most of the others (from the entire Trek-verse) hands down. Those two together were really quite special. Add Kirk into the mix, and that trio was practically unequaled in tv history.
