I love the whole Giants to Queen of the Demonweb Pit series, but my favorite out of all of them is probably G-2. I have a lot of love for the stand alone Hommlet as well.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I'll say Living the Legend. I haven't actually played it, but when I read through it, it sounds like Gary patiently teaching someone to play an RPG.

Great pick and you know this is a fav of mine. It's a really great module with lots of adventuring choices!Aergraith wrote:I'll say Living the Legend. I haven't actually played it, but when I read through it, it sounds like Gary patiently teaching someone to play an RPG.

He might just mean the last module, and not the whole series. Lots of people tend to forget the last module is called Queen of the Demonweb Pits.Rhuvein wrote:REJECTED!slimykuotoan wrote:Queen o' Spiders

Re: Favorite Gary Gygax module?
Q1, written by Dave Sutherland, wouldn't exactly qualify. Neither would Temple of Elemental Evil. Although based on Gary's works.
I'll be the outlier... S1: Tomb of Horrors. It has everything for all levels of play. Plus, it is vicious.

B2 Keep on the Borderlands
EDIT: This was my answer to my "favorite" Gygax mod, as per the string question, not necessarily what I think is the "best" mod - Keep just holds a favorite place in my heart and game for a lot of reasons - 1st ever gotten and read, 1st played, fun still when dusted off for a recent campaign... if I had to pick "best" I think I would go with T1 Village of Hommlet for the reasons mentioned in a post below...

Wow, all the Queen modules were awesome in their entirety. If I had to split them up, then perhaps Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, because it introduced the whole thing.

Village of Hommlett, definitely. It's such a simple set-up, but with a surprising amount of depth and things to do.
Though there’s something perfect about the meatgrinder of Tomb of Horrors. I’ve never run it, but I kind-of want to, just to see how some of the min-maxers in the group handle a module that hard, that relies so much on player smarts rather than character abilities.

Re: Favorite Gary Gygax module?
For me the G/D/Q series is the top. Breaking them apart .... I go for G2.
I can't give specific concrete reasons on why (which is funny ... today in class I told a cadet that if you are going to claim/debate something then always have objective reasons for doing so)
I guess it is a flavor thing ... more Viking than the rest. However, that may just be the fact that the DM that ran it was different than the one that ran G1 & G3 and may have just put a more Vikingesk twist on it.
For the least favorite of the series, hands down D1, it was ran by one of the worst DMs to run the series .... me ...
Honestly, I did run it and was weak as a DM with it being one of my first few games to run and my first module. But, I hope I wasn't that bad ....

Re: Favorite Gary Gygax module?
I like G2 simply because the Frost Giant caves are so brutal. The Fire Giants were disappointing after how kick but the Frost Giants were, even though the Red Dragon encounter in G3 is usually pretty awesome.

Your post got me to re-read this module. It's simply astounding in it's simplicity but brilliant in it's execution*!!!serleran wrote:... S1: Tomb of Horrors. It has everything for all levels of play. Plus, it is vicious.
The mod is 10 pages ~ a dungeon and a bad guy!! But, as you said - vicious and challenging for even veteran players (hehe, except "hack & slay" types!!).
*throwing a pun out there in remembrance of how much Gary liked to do it!

I'd have to say Steading of the Hill Giant Chief. Really shows that teamwork and patience are critical to survival. Had a lot of fun playing this whole series.
Re: Favorite Gary Gygax module?
I DM'd GDQ 1-7, S1....my players loved those.
As a player, I really liked S4.

B2 Keep on the Borderlands. My first module and still my favorite.
Re: Favorite Gary Gygax module?
This is a hard question because I like so many of them. But I will pick G1 for both the fun and for the nostalgia factor. It was one of the first I ran as a DM.

Re: Favorite Gary Gygax module?
For me, the canonical Gygax modules are as follows:
G1: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
G2: The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl
G3: Hall of the Fire Giant King
D1: Descent into the Depths of the Earth
D2: Shrine of the Kuo-Toa
D3: Vault of the Drow
S1: Tomb of Horrors
(1978 was a good year!)
Now to narrow that down...
I like the D trilogy more than the G trilogy or S1, so there's that. My favorite of the D trilogy is D2. It's therefore probably D2: Shrine of the Kuo-Toa.

I will also add Necropolis. And Legion of Gold.

I forgot about that one. I've read through it but never been lucky enough to be in a group that played through it. However, from the read through, I think it would be close to the top of my list if I had played it!

I'd have to go with Dungeonland. Just for being twisted.

I don't believe I have ever played that one. I will need to go look it up.Zudrak wrote: Legion of Gold was a lot of fun to run back in 1983(?). Great module.
EDIT: Ah, Gamma World. No wonder. I never got into Gamma World. Not sure why, not like I disliked it or anything. We just skipped it.
Did play Metamorphosis Alpha a few times though.
