A good, free, digital Sci Fi magazine..

Post by Treebore »

Meant for Star Frontier, but I've always gotten good ideas for Traveller and the like from SF materials, check them out if you like Sci FI role playing...

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Tree thanks, I keep forgetting about that site!

I loved Star Frontier (except for the accelerate, flip, decelerate mode of space travel) back in the day. But, it has been years since I thought about playing it.

Yep. I am far and away a big fan of Traveller, and as I said/hinted at in my OP, SF materials have always been great "idea mines" for the other Sci Fi games I do run. Mainly Traveller, but I also play/run Eclipse Phase, Cthulhutech, as well as others.

You didn't adapt the name of the game as your nom de plume, so nyahh!

My collection of hardcopies isn't all that large, but it doesn't need to be. I've figured out that with the exception of the classic core rulebook and supplement 2, I used about thirty pages combined out of five books (Supplement 4, Books, 4, 5, and 8, and Adventure 2). Since I didn't feel like carrying six LBBs around with my copy of The Traveller Book, I put them together into one book for myself.

I actually got rid of the bulk of my TNE and T4 material, as I simply was never going to play them. For reference I did keep a couple books. From TNE I kept Survival Margin and the Regency Sourcebook. From T4 I kept the Central Supply Catalog, though I do need to pick up a copy of Emperor's Arsenal again. I refuse to touch T20 with a ten-foot pole, and T5 is a virtually unplayable train wreck. Other than the MgT core book, I don't have any of their product. Anything I'm missing however I can easily reference, as I have the FFE CDs for all of the first four editions of the game.

Honestly, there's much to love about Traveller, especially since I believe it successfully recreates the golden age of science fiction. But it's actually my number two sci-fi game. FASA Star Trek is number one.

I went this route myself. I have been buying PDFs where available and replacing my hard copies of a lot of my collection. Something kind of fun about having most of my library (some books still not available on PDF) on a few CD ROMs or in my case, a 1 Terabyte USB drive.

What, you like traveler, I never put 2 & 2 together on that .... ;)

I'll admit, that despite having some of the PDFs, I've never played traveller. SF was the first Sci-fi, then I got into Star Wars d6.

With that I do look forward to Tree's Traveller game once we clear out the Rump Manor.

Yeah, I have the CD's too, plus I have most of Classic in print, nearly all of MegaT in print, all but 4 books of Mongoose in print, and most of those in PDF as well. I never took a liking to T4, so own maybe 5 books for it. I also own a lot of GURPS Traveller, and I own all but 2 Judges Guild Traveller adventures/resources.

The problems with TNE are legion. The switch to the Twilight 2000 system, Virus, and the changing of core game assumptions (i.e. reaction versus reactionless thrusters) alienated many. T4's big problem is the half die. That and the editing, which until T5 was absolutely horrendous. I've heard that for T5 the half die was discarded, but it's difficult to find under the mound of Advanced Squad Leader-level minutiae in the book.

It's clear you have the bigger collection, but how much of it do you actually use?

It depends. Now a days I primarily use the Mongoose Traveller books, and I typically use 6 to 10 of the books for it, depending on characters and what my players do. Any time I build a custom ship I still use the MegaTraveller rules, with errata, for that. For Vargyr, Vilani, Aslani and Solamani I still use my magazine style books for them. The only books I really don't use any more are my Classic rule books. Yet I will still use adventures, work sheets, and the like I got for Classic back in the day.

See, now I'm the reverse. MgT is not my primary Traveller ruleset, and MegaTraveller's starship design system makes me cringe. I primarily use the classic books, as I mentioned previously. But no one here should be surprised at that, given my oft-stated belief that the earliest version of a rule set is usually the best version.

Without the errata, it should make anyone cringe.

Speaking of SciFi, Traveller was my go to for most stuff, but I also loved Twilight 2000 and Morrow Project as well.

What SciFi other than Traveller did you guys like?

Interface Zero, Eclipse Phase, Cthulhu Tech, Cortex, Mindjammers and Starblazers are all Sci Fi based games I like.

I also enjoyed playing Twilight 2000, or the new 2013. I've never played or even read Morrow Project. At least, not that I remember.
