Greetings from South Jersey

Post by Fosco »

Hello all! I'm a long time (20 years on and off) D&D player that is new to C&C. So far I've bought the PHB and CGK, the older Codex of Ehrde (sp?), along with a few A series adventures. I'm going to try running my own game for the first time for my teenage boys and a few friends.

Character generation seems fairly straightforward, as do the combat and other checks. Any recommendations from you veterans on where I should be starting and what pitfalls I need to look out for?

Thanks in advance....

Welcome to the boards Fosco!

The most important thing rules-wise: get a good idea of how the Siege Engine works.

The more you understand the Siege Engine, the less you will be caught off guard. If you are used to doing ability checks in Dungeons & Dragons, the Siege Engine won't be too much of a shift though primes are at a substantial advantage over non-primes. Watch out for the way saves work, quite different in Castles & Crusades, especially when dealing with spells and caster levels.

Also it never hurts to run a few practice combats.

Anyway, good luck on your first game!

Welcome!

The Siege Engine is great. it might seem like there aren't enough rules at first, LOL. but there are, and that's the elegant beauty of C&C.

As someone who also found C&C last month, I find they are right, the Siege Engine is a wonderful tool. No matter the situation I can use the Siege Engine process to resolve it quickly. I hope you enjoy the find as well as I am.

Hey Fosco! That was my grandma's family name...maybe we're cugini? Anyway, I recently got back into gaming as well and looked around at a few systems, including Pathfinder and 5E. I found C&C with its Siege Engine system to be the most attractive. I am the DM/CK for my 2 young kids and find that the system works great. We are almost finished running through Keep on the Borderlands and I find that the conversions are easy. I'm a big Greyhawk fan, and plan on continuing the adventures there, but am looking into the Troll's World of Airde as well. I've gotten some solid advice from the guys on here. I think you'll like the system. Jump into it. Enjoy!

Rgr that, welcome & enjoy

My advice (from player side of the table) is avoid saying no. make it a siege check and encourage the players to think out side the box.

I appreciate all the replies! I guess I know where to go when I'm stuck on something. :D

Got a weekend full of baseball and soccer games for the boys, but hope to have more updates soon.

@Cugini although I am half Italian, Fosco is the name of my favorite halfling PC!

Cheers!

Welcome to the Crusade!

Look around, ask questions, and play. We're a motley bunch, but willing to help where we can.

Thanks, Rigon. Read your house rules, which I like very much. How do you deal with spell memorization? I was never a huge fan of a Mage/cleric being able to only memorize certain spells from their spell book every day. My current DM uses a spell point system allowing casters to use any spells they have at a cost, ie, a 2nd level spell costs 2 spell points and a 4th costs 4 etc.

Do you think that is a viable option in the C&C world?

I'm like you on that. However, spell casters are my weakness, even back in the day when I DMed. So, take what I say with a big helping of salt ...

The CKG has a few options on how to change the fire and forget magic to a spell point system.

If I remember correctly, 1 is strait spell points and cast away until you are out. However, that can be a bit overpowering (I'm assuming it is any way). Another is points but limited to the number of spell levels you would be able to cast regularly.

I'm sure others around here have play tested the various spell point systems and can give specific info & advice about their use.

I know one popular HR around here - well popular with the 2 guys that DM the games I'm in - is to allow clerics to switch any spell they have memorized to a curative spell of that level when needed.

Might I suggest you also read the spell/casting rules as 5th ed D&D used them. I like the way they handled it. It limited the number of spells while not doing the old "Oops, you already cast that one" mind set.

Check it out. :D

THIS
The default is YES, not "no you don't have the feat, skill, bene, bonus, etc etc"
YES.

to be clear, Yes, you can try... but it's yes.
