Hi guys. Glad to be here. Picked up a copy of the flipbook at NTRPG Con and I'm rekindling my like of C&C (while trying to come to terms with the 3E stuff in it). Had a 1st printing long ago but fell out of gaming. Nice to know C&C is still around.
One question: Now I'm heavily into the OSR and I JUST got around to noticing 3E (and, by extension, C&C) has variable hit dice types for monsters. Since I think that the Basic/1E/2E way of D8 HD is the way to go (standardized HD types, one and done, nothing more to remember), anyone ever use that model?

Just use the D8.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Welcome to the Crusade, DM Glen. I feel closer every day to seeing a C&C Podcast...
Yes, use the d8, or simply use your existing monster books. Yes, this will shift the ratio of HP to the monster's base to hit, but I'm sure you have a feel for how that's going to affect the combat. Should be fine; I don't think the math is too fragile to shift those things around.

Welcome and have fun with it, it will all work. 10d10 dragon is easily converted to about 12d8, easy peasy. 1d10 undead is so close to 1d8 undead, so who cares.... I can't recall the last time I actually roll monster hp.. I just pick some in the middle tapering off to the high end... so do as you please, it will work.
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.

I like uniform HD. I equate it to party level when judging encounter lethality.

Then just use the D8 as your standard. Thats one of the great things about C&C, you can make such changes and not create a ripple of rules issues. So do as I do, change anything you don't really like to something you do like. Its your game after all, so make it so.
That is why so many of us have House Rules documents. Omote and Rigon have theirs linked in their Signatures, mine can always be found in the Online Games forum on the first page of my current game's thread. We make C&C be what we want it to be.

Thanks again guys. I was a bit hesitant to do it (I'm bad at math) but D8 looks like the way to go.

Hey Glen, welcome aboard!
Believe it or not, you must've gotten the last flip book. When Liz and I went to the TLG booth Sunday morning Steve said I could have one, but nobody could find a copy. <sigh!> And I gave them the idea too, from my love of Traveller double adventures. Oh well, I suppose its really academic for me anyway...but as you noted during the Victorious game they're darn convenient!

I love variable hit dice and think variable is better/superior, but nothing bad will happen if you use a standardized d8 all around (unless you are a monster who ends up with fewer hit points).

Welcome aboard!
Standard d8 HD? Never a problem.
When I first started running C&C I used the AD&D Monster Manuals & Fiend Folio (didn't have Monsters & Treasure).
I still use other sources here and there, so many monster books out there and it's easy to convert to C&C.
Also, if you haven't checked them out yet, look into Classic Monsters and Monsters & Treasure of Aihrde, two great resources.

Sure, but then you have to remember variable HP adjustments for monsters. Is that troll 6+3 or 6+6?SmokestackJones wrote: One question: Now I'm heavily into the OSR and I JUST got around to noticing 3E (and, by extension, C&C) has variable hit dice types for monsters. If I were to go the route of fixed HD, it would be applied to everything -- PC HP, weapon/spell damage, and monster HP. Like OD&D.
Re: New Day, New (?) Member, New Post
Did I miss it some place, do you have a game thread under the "Crusades" section? Start there prior to podcasts?
