Changes Since 1st Printing?

Post by Name Level »

After a long hiatus, I'm returning to the game. I currently have 1st Printing rulebooks, and I took note of the changes on the Wikipedia page. My question: If I wish to update my ruleset without repurchasing all the books, is there a supplement that provides only the changed content?

There have been too many changes since 2004 for such a document to be feasible. While the Players Handbook major changes (new barbarian class, illusionist healing, revamped encumbrance) could be detailed, there are enough minor tweaks and fixes to the book that a changes document would be of dubious value due to length. Monsters & Treasure is even worse, as virtually every monster and many of the magic items received fixes and updates.

Well, shoot. I bought new copies of 1e just to replace them without using them. Thanks for the reply, though. Looking forward to revisiting the game.

EDIT: Correction -- 2nd edition, not 1st. Still, I assume too many changes for my resources to be useful.

As long as you all use the same printing, 1st or second, your fine. You will only run into confusion if you use one printing and your players use a 3rd through 5th.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

If you do end up replacing them (and not care about color), get the flipbook, it'll save you a few bucks.

I haven't noticed any changes. The only rule(s) that matter are the ones you use. C&C doesn't have (m)any rules.

If you go into my "Whatnots" link, there is a PDF for the changes made from the 3rd print to the 4th print. That should be enough for you to continue using your 1st print books with later printings.

So long as you are all on the same printing or close you should be OK with some printing or other declared to be the "master copy" and all other versions slave to it WHEN differences are found, that should not be often once you get past the three main areas Traveller mentioned.
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.

Honestly, in his shoes I would spring for the new printing rather than worrying about what's changed and what hasn't. I can understand the focus this thread appears to have on the PHB, as players and CKs alike need it to play, but it would be good to keep in mind that M&T has had major changes made to it as well. Part of the reason the books received a major overhaul these last couple of years was to eliminate a lot of the "pain points" in the books. By "pain points" I mean places in the books where information was confusing or completely missing, e.g. missing special attributes in some monsters, and the armor and shields tables. By eliminating the "pain points" it makes the game more accessible to lapsed or new players, by providing added detail and clarification, without overwhelming the players.

In other words, the books should be easy to understand, while still allowing the CK latitude to make the game his own.

Lets not forget not everyone can necessarily afford to drop $40+ on new printings of books whenever they feel like it. Some people have to decide what is more important to do with that money. Food? New shoes for the kids? Fill up the gas tank? A new car tire?

So for some of us, all too many of us, such a decision is a big deal. I am not saying that is the OP's position/situation, even if it is, its none of our business.
