I'm not playing, but folks who don't have the rules may want to track down Perilous Journeys. It's a clone of LA with the weird terminology eliminated. I don't know how close it is to RAW LA, but people have reviewed it favorably.

Well, it depends on the specifics of the setting etc (already pmed the GM my questions)

Depending on the answers, and the needs of the party, I'll play either:

A scout/huntsman ( I can tie it into being a sergeant/man-at-arms for Tree's knight)

or

A non-ordered character, based off what I picture a renaissance type 'book-hunter' in a fantasy setting would be like.

We pretty much all have Essentials and/or the actual books. So I think everyone has the rules. There is one of our group I am not sure about, so maybe it would work for them.

It was funny to find out how many of those in my Monday group already had the rules and were interested in playing.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

In answer to those that have asked me about what the setting is going to be like, imagine a harsh cold, Wintry land, heavily forested near an icy sea. The area has a scant population that in many ways resembles that of a mix of Slavic and Norse cultures with some Greek/Roman influences.

The pantheons available would be Tenoric (a mix of Teutonic and Nordic), Slavic, and Olympian (Greco-Roman). "City-based" Avatars would not be a likely, though it is possible if you don't mind being outside of your usual habitat. Magic "levels" are moderate to high. Noble Avatars are allowed, but will start out impoverished; without title or right to any lands.

I will be posting more soon.

As for my character, I will be playing someone massively disordered, possibly insane. I almost always have some magic in there and some stealth, usually some kind of demi human (elf) but as I don't know how the game works I may end up accidentally with a hippopotamus pistolier.

Description:
Egor has always been a woodsman. He is not unfriendly to townspeople, and indeed, has been known to help them. For his own part, he generally limits his contact to short trips to sell or trade hides, furs, meat, fish, and useful herbs and fruits. Every year he travels to a rendez-vous where other foresters trade, have contests, and share news and survival skills. He lives in a simple shelter, well-made, but temporary. He leaves these behind as he moves on, and these have saved the lives of travelers whose carts break down in the woods. He enjoys the company of others, especially if they share food, stories, and drink, but doesn't understand the ways of towns and cities, and indeed, though he can stare down a wolf, towns frighten and frustrate him.

I have posted the basics of my character in my very first post to this thread. As for my picks, I will probably just do the picks given in the example given in the book for the Noble on page 16 of my book (the 1999 Hekaforge printing).

I think I did everything correctly, but please double check (Pretty hard to screw up with a Human Noble example in the book). I think I show where I got every modifier from, if not just ask.

I have $25,000 to spend, according to the character creation rules, but you mentioned this part of the world is rather poor, so how do you want me to handle that? Still buy gear with it?

Lurker, I'll be happy to have you as my personal Huntsmen, it will be nice to know one of us can keep us fed on the road, etc... While I am not incompetent at Hunting, I know nothing about pretty much every other aspect.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

IS there an actual rules difference between a Destrier and a Courser? Aren't they just different terms for War horses?

Also, I will be doing my own picks, not using the books example picks, mostly because the books Noble went with Archer, while I went with Mechanic.

I noticed that you didn't add 2 points of Health to your Base Ratings for taking Chivalry.

You may spend the $25,000 or you can keep it in valuable gems/jewels or a mix thereof. That is all of your inheritance. I would not recommend spending it on things that will get in the way as you will be traveling with your companions through a heavily forested area, arriving at a hunters' camp. I would also recommend that you buy or take picks of two sets of armor, one for heavy combat and the other for quieter movement, that way you are prepared for more than one kind of endeavor if the need arises.

There is a difference among the types of horses you mention, as well as a third.

The three types of war horses are:

Destrier (large) - H: 80, P: 25, S: 22, A: 1-20+3 P&S, D: 2
Charger (med.) - H: 70, P: 25, S: 28, A: 1-20+1 P&S, D: 2
Courser (small) - H: 60, P: 25, S: 30, A: 1-20 P&S, D: 2

After trying to come up with a different character concept, I've decided to stick with the Bravo. I think I can work a backstory for it. More to come when I get it worked on.

I take it the weapon descriptors have specific game mechanics meanings? Cutting, Cleaving, thrusting etc...?

There's a lot of variety with the Bravo, basically it's more of a fighting style and attitude than anything, and they can be found in any society in one form or another.

If you are talking about swords specifically they describe the way in which they are used, rather than specific mechanics, though for reference here is a list:

Sword Identifiers:
Sword, cleaving: falchion, machete
Sword, cutting: broad sword, cutlass
Sword, cut. & thrust: katana, long sword
Sword, cutting, curved: saber, scimitar, tulwar, yatagan
Sword, cutting, heavy: two-handed sword
Sword, thrusting: rapier
Sword, thrusting, short: short sword, small sword
Sword, thin, thrusting: epee, foil, light rapier, dueling saber

And of course Speed Class, Precision bonus, length of the weapon, as well as minimum Harm and possibly type of Harm vary.
