FATE, Cthulhu systems come to my mind first.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Is one more of a narrative and easier system to teach? Specifically I'm looking to run con like games with friends who are beginners or infants to the whole tabletop experience

FATE is pretty narrative heavy, and to really do a good job on a Cthulhu a lot of narration is important, but as far as easy to learn? Hmmmm... Probably FATE.

Personally, I've found FATE to be surprisingly difficult to learn. The rules are not extensive, but they are not easy to play with. It takes a solid GM and smart, invested players. Again, in my opinion. I haven't played a lot of FATE, but the sessions I did play turned me off the system.

I agree, the FATE system, while simple, has some unique elements that don’t jive as much with traditional RPG thinking. You need to really understand the whole tagging an aspect thing. For quite a bit of time when we were playing the Dresden Files RPG, we were terrible because we didn’t do that as much as we ought to have.

My vote would go towards Call of Cthulhu, or the Storyteller system.

While it's not dark in of itself, the Ghostbusters RPG is highly narrative and requires a ton of effort on the part of the GM to relay story and tone. If you are trying to do a detailed campaign with a lot of focus on weapons, powers, horror effects, etc. perhaps the GB RPG is not what you are looking for. I recommend it because it's very light on work for the players, and characters can be created in less than 10 mins. All of West End Games "recent" offerings are free on OBS, as well is the Ghostbusters RPG is free on the internet (and legal!).

Yea, Fate definitely requires a different way of thinking, but since his players are all new, only he would have to "get it", and if he does, its pretty simple.

Also take a look at Shadow of the Demon Lord by Robert Schwalb. I played a few games with him at Gary Con and bought into the KS.
Resistance is futile.

DON'T REST YOUR HEAD (by Fred Hicks; the FATE guy) is a creepy and bizarre system due to the whole dream thing. (Actually, part of the concept is that you can't sleep and so your brain starts to go a bit daft.) It has a pretty quick dice mechanic and might be what you're looking to fine.

Good call, finarvyn! I had forgotten about Don't Rest Your Head. Plus, it's a slim volume, so it's not terribly rules-heavy.
