PHB-6. Changes to Barbarians

Post by bostoned »

Hello,
I own PHB 5th printing. I heard that the only rules change in PHB 6th was changes to the Barbarian class. Can anyone here tell me the specific changes?

Thanks.

Don't have my 5th with me but I cannot think of any changes when looking at my 6th printing.

I only know of changes between the 3rd and 4th printings for the Barbarian and Monk, plus the new Illusionist spells.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I know the 6th printing clarifies one of the barbarian abilities.

Hi Buttmonkey,

Would you please tell me what that clarification to the ability was? Thanks, Ed

Intimidate. Compare this part (from 6th printing) to 5th printing text:

"... This ability takes effect as soon as the barbarian uses the ability. He must announce it before rolling initiative. It has a 15 foot radius area of effect. Intimidate is usable only once per combat encounter. At 1 st level, a barbarian can intimidate one creature. The number of creatures intimidated increases with level as follows: up to 2 creatures at 3 rd level, up to 4 creatures at 6 th level, up to 8 creatures at 10 th level, and up to 16 creatures at 15 th level. The intimidation ends the moment the barbarian fails to strike the intimidated creature."

It's still a little poorly worded as it suggests that the barbie has to strike all the intimidated creatures... or maybe one of them. Doesn't specify so the assumption lies with however the Castle Keeper reads though, logically, it should be "any." I know some would read it the other way... possibly on purpose.

It doesn't read that way to me. 1) Combat is assumed to be entered by Init roll. 2) During that combat (encounter) those "intimidated" stay that way unless/until you fail to successfully hit ANY of them.

Well... yes. "Any" would be at least "one."

Right. But I don't see where is says you must hit ALL of them.

For instance. He intimidates all 3 opponents. Cracks one upside the head and then demands money from the other two (who are still intimidated).

Ah, well, that's the interpretive part of this "The intimidation ends the moment the barbarian fails to strike the intimidated creature." It can imply that, if there are 16 affected, each one has to be struck as each is intimidated. Or it could mean only one of them as the "creature" is singular.

It could be worded to remove the possibility of potential purposeful (and yes, this is being pedantic) ambiguity.

Thanks to Arduin for posting the excerpt. And I agree with most here in that, the Barbarian must hit at least one of the intimidated creatures. Even the most easily intimidated of creatures couldn't possibly expect their opponent to hit all 16 of them in one round.
