Engineer Class?
Engineer Class?
Hey there,
I was wondering, has anyone made an Engineer class for C&C? I found on for 5e on enWorld, but would rather be playing C&C than 5e to be honest.
Any ideas folks?
Cheers!

Re: Engineer Class?
Yuck, Engineers, you know you can always tell and engineering, but you just can't tell them much.
PS I am an engineer and my current gaming group is nearly all engineers, mathematicians, or technologists.. that's why we escape into CnC.

Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.
Re: Engineer Class?
We steal from 2nd Edition "skills" to add into our back stories of things we're good at or know about that are outside our basic class abilities and generally assumed stuff. Engineer is in there, I think it takes two or three ranks to even gain.

Got it, thanks! Stoopid spam filter caught it.Go0gleplex wrote:I emailed it to you dude.
It's good, but not exactly what I am looking for.
This is the one from EnWorld that they made for 5e, it's a little more fantastic which is what I am looking for for the Tinker Gnome in my party.
Anyone got anything more in this direction?
Cheers!

Just port it over to C&C. Port the skills over and use the Siege Engine for adjudication.

Re: Engineer Class?
Cool, but one I might never play, my ME "piled high and deep" was enough for me! Give me a Ranger, Cleric, or Monk-Assassin any day ;} But every good castle needs an engineer. Dwarves and Gnomes for sure. I always picture Mr Scott from Star Trek as a Dwarf.

Re: Engineer Class?
To the best of my knowledge, most engineers of the middle ages dealt with siege warfare, castle construction (sometimes referred to as architects), and mechanical constructs. No electricity and such and not many applied engineering to road and sewers quite yet. Though the romans did have civil engineers that did their thing before the collapse and onset of the dark ages, that knowledge got lost with most everything else. So that's how I modeled my take on the class. A tinker mechanic, siege and structural guru. *shrug* And knowing firsthand how engineers just LOVE to change things they get their mitts on...well...there ya go.

Re: Engineer Class?
Yeah, I prefer to stay away from Engineers, they tend to want to bring technology into the world, and I don't want it. If I did, I'd use the Iron Kingdoms or Ebberron settings. I much prefer it like Greyhawk or Wilderlands does it, its lost and must be found.

Re: Engineer Class?
There is a great book "Engineering in the ancient world" by J. G. Landels ISBN 0-520-04127-5, 1978.
Contents to give you a taste:
Power and Energy sources
water supplies
water pumps
cranes and hoists
catapults
ships and transport
The progress of theoretical knowledge
Principals of greek and roman writings on tech
Hero of Alexandria
Vitruvius
Frontinus
Pliny
So this stuff will fit with anything in the world of Greek/Roman but much is lost in the "dark ages"... so you could have a "technomancer" by simply having some books and getting back to the level of the greeks if your post greek/roman.
Cool stuff here..
I ways I'm with tree, but if I have a creative Engineer who can prove he figured stuff out that is fitting AND does not unbalance things, great, but most are too lazy, why work hard when magic beats most tech anyway...
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." So I guess our corollary is "Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from high tech."

Re: Engineer Class?
I kind of like the class. However, like I've said in other threads, I prefer lower magic settings so my vote for it should be taken with a grain of salt.
I'm not sure I like the result of 'repeating' cross bow, but I do like the idea behind it. I don't know how I'd tinker with it though to come up with something better.
You know it would fit real well in a high middle ages to renaissance setting. Especially, looking at it like someone that would be adventuring to find the 'lost technology' .... yeah, I think that would be why someone like that would adventure. Right along side a 'book hunter' ..... Yeah, I like it more now.

Thanks for the info on the book. I'll have to give it a look see. It sounds right up my alley!

Another Engineering related book I have, is De Re Metallica. It, of course, focus' on metal forging/mining/smelting etc...
I have the old hard cover, but there is a new soft cover reprint...

Re: Engineer Class?
The repeating crossbow isn't that far fetched. They were fairly notable in china if I remember correctly and migrated over. Think of it as the missile variation of the fighter's extra attack. And of course it only works for the engineer, noone else so it is less likely to be abused.
I'd lump the cranes, hoists, catapults, and possibly the pumps and stuff in under siege warfare though the pumps and power wouldn't be outside of Tinker or Improvise either.

Re: Engineer Class?
One of the "3i" versions had some alchemical techie kind of items that could be purchased, that was kind of cool and if I recall the old DnD from the Dragon "ninja" had gun power kind of stuff.. so there are source things out there that should not be too over powering. And a match, smoke bomb or noise maker would not be too over powering. Some cool acid, etc.
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.
Re: Engineer Class?
I prefer, when I do invention-style, to go the full way... like the Arduin "techno" class.
This is much more restrained. That does have its benefits.
A game, and its rules, are only limited by those playing it.

Re: Engineer Class?
Weis and Hickman wrote the Darksword trilogy (1986–87) which is heavy on the various magic classes or schools, but a forbidden class of "magic" technology is center to the story.. could be good idea fodder.

Re: Engineer Class?
Would anyone want some "tech" or engineered gadgets in the next Doomsday? Basically non-magical "magic" items. Matches, smoke bombs, vile of metal acid, Over-Under Cross Bow, etc.

Re: Engineer Class?
I have a ton of these myself so not so much. It would have to be something not really covered before.Captain_K wrote:Would anyone want some "tech" or engineered gadgets in the next Doomsday? Basically non-magical "magic" items. Matches, smoke bombs, vile of metal acid, Over-Under Cross Bow, etc.
Personally, a project I have wanted to devote time to is a random system for making gadgets, like an "Engineering Tech" resource. Just... don't have the time.
Re: Engineer Class?
May I suggest you submit to Tree a short or long list of your top "engineering" tech items as if they are "non-magical" magic items, like their own little special section in the M&T book? I'm sure we'd all love t o see them. The only ones I kind of know about are things like sun stones, load stones, magnets, acids, itching powders, and the stuff from DnD 3.X I think had a few "alchemist" things.

Re: Engineer Class?
For a glimpse into the kinds of things I would include, I would refer one to the CKG and the "new equipment" section... seeing as I added them.
Re: Engineer Class?
Shows how much I looked at the CKG, THANKS, I must spend time getting to know this book better!

Re: Engineer Class?
For what it's worth, I've always liked some of the ideas behind the Mad Scientist class in Deadlands D20. No idea how I'd convert that to Castles and Crusades.
