Incidents and Scandals of the 1780s – A FREE RPG Resource

Post by clavis123 »

They say the truth is stranger than fiction, and the real life events of the 1780s often eclipse the wildest imaginary plots. Visit an age of luxury and squalor, where horrors and wonders stood side-by-side. It was a time when you could be initiated into occult mysteries by Count Cagliostro, experience the “animal magnetism” of Franz Mesmer, or play peasant with Queen Marie Antoinette! The most fashionable woman in England lived in a ménage à trois, while a vicious serial slasher appeared on the streets of London. The infamous Marquis de Sade was safely imprisoned, but also surreptitiously writing works that would eventually shock the world.

Use “Incidents and Scandals of the 1780s” to provide background for your historical games, or inspire the pseudo-eighteenth century of your imaginary game world.

Sweet!

Will this also be added as an appendix to Ghastly Affair?

EDIT - also noticed that this time period coincides with certain events of historical significance. Quite ghastly affairs in themselves!

“Incidents and Scandals of the 1780s” is an excerpt from the complete “Ghastly Age Timeline” that covers the years from 1765 to 1820. I'm not sure whether or not to add the Timeline to the main rulebook, or save it for the future “Ghastly Companion”. On the one hand, I purposely avoided putting a lot of names and dates into the main rulebook, because I didn't want it to seem too academic, and I wanted to emphasize that the game can also be set in a purely imaginary place. On the other hand, the Timeline might help people by providing clear background information, and also inspire Affairs involving historical figures and events. Iincluding the complete Timeline will add over 30 pages to the book, and I don't want the thing to turn into an unmanageable brick! But, I definitely also see how the Timeline might add a lot of value to the text. Probably, there are things in there now that could be edited out to make room.

What does the forum think?

Thanks. One side effect of working on the complete time-line was really seeing way that many current events (such the current Crimean crisis) have their roots in conflicts dating back to the 18th century. Much of the conflict around the middle east dates back to Ottoman policies aimed at keeping its conquered populations divided (and the Sultans' harems stuffed with sex slaves). Russia and Turkey have been at odds over the region since Catherine the Great's time. Its often forgotten that the United Sates has been intervening in North Africa since the very beginning of this nation (the First and Second Barbary Wars), and that the first nation to officially recognize the U.S. was Morocco. Terrorism and hostage taking are nothing new, and a primary excuse for European colonization of North Africa was the persistent slave raiding and piracy emanating from the Barbary Coast.

Rgr on all the issues having roots back to that era. Between the issues that started then and those that started (or more accurately were exacerbated) in the post WWI , the world would be a much different/better place if things then were changed.

As such, you have a gold mine of ideas there!
