Amazons, Guardians, and Runecasters: Adding classes to Atla
ntis.
I've come up with the idea to use Castles and Crusades for a setting of my own design, namely, Atlantis in the Age of Sagittarius. However, I'm not sure how to make use of all the classes in the Player's Handbook, while at the same time, I think I need classes for Amazons, Guardians, and Runecasters, which would replace the Knight, Paladin, and Ranger classes (not necessarily respectively).
I'm not sure, though, how to go about creating a balanced class for C&C. I'm especially daunted by the prospect of creating an experience table for each class: how should I determine how many experience points are needed to reach each level? Other than that, it should be quite similar to creating classes for Dungeons and Dragons or for Pathfinder.
I'd also be grateful for any other advice, or pointers to articles or blogs I can use for guidance.
Amazons: Strong, intelligent, deadly. They rely on dexterity moreso than armor, although they are well known for being able to deflect blows and missiles with their bracers of osmiridium. (research note: Plato describes a "black form of gold" that is mined in Atlantis. He calls it "adamantum", but it sounds like it could be specially processed osmiridium.) I may be able to steal some concepts from the Ranger and Paladin class.
Guardians: Plato describes the guardians in _The Republic_. They are philosopher-warriors, forbidden to have treasure, or anything that they do not need. If you've read the book or seen the movie _Divergent_, I think the author drew a lot of inspiration from Plato. They do not marry, but hold the love of each other in common. (Women are as common in the ranks of guardians as men are.) I'd like to combine aspects of rangers, knights, and paladins in this class.
Runecasters: While wizards master paragraphs of magic, runecasters master single letters. I conceive of them as being ancestral to the wizard class, operating without books, but being able to unlock the power of single runes. Mechanically, I see them as being similar to the sorcerers of Dungeons and Dragons with limited spells known, but able to cast spells without having to declare them at the start of the day.
When I get a chance I can post more details. Thanks for any advice you can steer my way.

Well I see runes more Viking than Atlantean,I would keep the Wizard if I was you,I would use long spellscrolls instead than a spellbook, the presence of wizard's spellscrolls would give more the idea of lost knowledge after the sunk of Atlantis.Utgardloki wrote:ntis.

I would also keep the Ranger, pathfinders exist since the dawn of humanity, they're not a medieval setting exclusive.
As for Guardian to me it looks like a rebranded Knight, just use it and use the code of conduct you wrote in this thread
Re: Amazons, Guardians, and Runecasters: Adding classes to
Could someone please link him to the C&C Companion PDF on the TLG website? I need to check out of my hotel and don't have time to search for it.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

It does look like a very good reference. I'm still going to have to design my three classes, but I'm sure I'll get lots of inspriation from that companion. Maybe I'll even be able to contribute my creations.
Re: Amazons, Guardians, and Runecasters: Adding classes to
Amazons sound like a mix of monk or fighter-thief or some such.. don't get too stuck on names.. mix classes and abilities strengthen one or play it in a way that works. Nothing says your straight fighter cannot be wise and intelligent and practice philosophy while simply being a fighter.. its more in how you play it than the class abilities at times. But have fun with it.
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.
Re: Amazons, Guardians, and Runecasters: Adding classes to
First let me say welcome
Now, take what I say with a huge grain of salt. Especially in lite of the fact that every class I've tried to create comes out a bit clunky for my taste. So, far from being an expert at making classes.
I'd say don't be to wrapped up about balancing the classes etc. Make a class that fits (or even better modify one that exists to better fit your world/game style etc) then find a class that is close to it and match your new class' exp chart to the old class. Don't sweat the small stuff in it.
Also, look for classes on the board that you can steel or mine for ideas. Gus like Serl, tree, rigon, omote and many others have great house ruled classes and such that can help out

Absolutely! While unofficial I think the variety of classes will give you many ideas to work with for your own versions. Have you seen the Codex'?
