Another Sneak Peak of Art from the “Ghastly Affair” RPG

Post by clavis123 »

Enjoy a second dose of interior art from the hardcopy version of the “Ghastly Affair” RPG, coming in early 2016. Presented for your dark pleasure are six more shadows of desire, fear, and decadence, in an eighteenth-century inspired silhouette style. Just like the game, they are meant for a mature audience.

Cool artwork. :D

Can you remind me what this game is about? (I know that it's gothic, romantic, and horror -- is it a specific historical era or is it a not-Earth world?)

Is it a "clone" or a new system?

Ghastly Affair's default setting is called the “Ghastly Age”, which corresponds to the historical period from 1765 to 1820. Its the era of Marie-Antoinette and the Marquis de Sade, of Nelson and Napoleon, and of Byron and Blake. Games can set on earth at that time, or a fictitious setting inspired by it. My own “Saga” is set in and around the French city of Rennes just after Napoleon became First Consul. The example “Affair” given in the rules, however, is set in a fictional Principality called “Morsignon”. The game includes general information about late-eighteenth century society, to aid in role-playing and running games. I've presented the material in such a way that it can be used both for historically-based games, and those set in imaginary worlds.

The system is based on the SRD, and utilizes a simple “roll-under Ability” mechanic. In addition, the game uses free-form, player-defined Assets and Afflictions to customize characters. Early versions of much of the material were originally posted to these boards, and are still available on my blog. Many of the long-time board members might remember me posting the “Demon Hunter” and “Libertine" classes, for example. While “Ghastly Affair” is based on and adapts much of my earlier material, it is definitely its own game. Everything has been re-thought and re-designed for better emulation of the Gothic genre. It's not a retro-clone per se, but it is OGL. Even if you don't play the game “as is”, there's plenty you could utilize.

The game can be played to emphasize the Horror or Romance, as each group prefers. Its based on the earlier pre-Victorian Gothic Romances, before Horror, Crime, and Science Fiction had emerged as separate genres. A group of PCs could be desperate Bandits looking for their latest score, Demon Hunters out to rid the world of Werewolves, or a Mad Scientist and his retainers engaged in outrageous research. The game assumes both virtuous and vice-ridden characters – both “True Innocent” and “Libertine” are Classes! Surviving High Society and perusing forbidden romances are as important as fighting. An adversary is as likely to be an aristocrat out to slander you, as a demon wanting to possess your body. Plus, characters receive bonuses for actions taken on behalf of their “True Love” - even if that True Love turns out to be a horrible monster!

Wow, yet again, great stuff!

On the pict you posted, I wasn't sure ... until I read the title .. "Why decide" that perfects it.

Then, knowing me no surprise here, virtue stumbles is great. Then the twisted side of me likes the tree & vengeance, and heck the witch & death are great too!

Like the pict says ... "Why decide" ;)

Again, that too sounds great. Slander is more deadly than a knife ... a knife cuts once .... slander cuts every time it is repeated ... (I can't remember where I heard that).

Love the idea of true love being a monster ... it reminds me of a paladin I had back in the day that ended up helping out a temptress devil. She kept giving him info to defeat various demons and other devils that countered her. He was doing good but evil too benefited from it ...

Yeah, this would be a great game, if played by the right group ...

This type of situation is critically important to my current campaign where politics and high society have just as dangerous as the cults of Orcus! Another reason I plan to look into this RPG.

As I learned running and playing the Legend of the 5 Rings RPG, more lives are lost and won in the battlefields of the courts than on any actual battlefield.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
