Shirtless monk?

Question for Peter, not a biggy just curious;

I just started playing C&C, and have a good group going so I decided to order another PHB 2nd ed. I picked up my order at a local bricks and mortar store and suprise, it was a first edition. As I really like your work readily skimmed through it looking for different paintings. So then I noticed a dif between the 1st edition monk and 2nd edition monk; No Shirt?

What were your reasons? Again just curious.
